Just that. First holiday without kids can go anytime of year except summer (June, July, August), main Easter and main Christmas. Swaying between exciting long haul or sophisticated Europe or just lovely beach holiday. Budget as low as possible. Ideas so far are SE Asia, Greek Island, South of France, Italy, Montenegro or Sardinia. Under pressure to book time off due to booking issues at our jobs but that will depend on destination!!

Malaysia is beautiful and really cheap to eat out and get around.

Can’t you give us some parameters? Do you want a hotel, self catering, resort, town? What do you like to do - sports, food, history, wandering, just chilling? Pool or sea (or both?) want company or happy to be the two of you? How hot? Really exciting to plan!!
our first break without kids was to Nice for a couple days, last year was by a short cruise…

May I suggest a visit to the Ohrid lake in North Macedonia..budget-friendly location still undiscovered and unspoilt...temperatures round 27 degrees in September, amazing food, pristine and warm lake water, interesting cultural and historical sights nearby...it is cheaper than Montenegro and Albania..

We’ve just been to Vietnam. Flights were about £700 each because we didn’t book early but it is very cheap when you are there.

There is a lot to see and there are great beaches for those that like that sort of thing. March is a good time to go.

Thank you, on more discussion with my husband we are thinking Europe for next year but maybe further afield another year. Vietnam and Malaysia definitely sound our kind of thing but i think we want a bit more time and we have 2 weeks max next year. May, in the weeks before half term are probably the only dates we can do. Probably a mix of city break/ culture, nature, plus beach/pool relax part as well. Will look at Macedonia, thanks for the suggestion. Holidays we have loved are Lake Garda, Croatia and Dordogne. We love pretty places, culture, non chain restaurants, wine, walking, swimming and not particularly bothered about company of others on holiday but are sociable generally!!! We will talk to anyone, but like doing our own thing on holiday. Very excited to get away on out own but first time with an empty nest so think we need to plan something to look forward to.

What about a couple of days in Athens and then an island?? We loved Athens last summer for museums and food and atmosphere - and then you can get to a range of islands by flight or ferry easily. My favourite island is kephalonia but there are many Aegean islands which are gorgeous too!!
