Tenerife winter sun: where would suit us?

OMGitsnotgood · 24/04/2025 09:27

We have been to the other Canary Islands for winter sun but not Tenerife. I would appreciate advice from those who know the island well to help choose where to stay.

We like a bit of life in a resort - lots of bars and restaurants to choose from - but don’t need clubs/party vibe.
No children.
Like to walk by the sea but would rather sunbathe by a pool than on the beach.
We will hire a car to explore the island.
I believe the south will be warmer in winter?

So was thinking Costa Adeje. 1) Does that seem to meet the above criteria? 2) Any other resorts I should look at?

Primarily I am asking for advice re location, but will add our accommodation requirements in case any one has some suggestions:

Would prefer self catering but need a decent sized pool so we can have a ‘proper’ swim each day, sometimes we choose hotels purely for tbe bigger pools. We definitely do not want All Inclusive or half board, although I know some hotels offer room or B&B only options. Would want to be in walking distance of bars and restaurants but don’t mind a 20-30 min walk.

Thank you

Costa Adeje sounds like what you are looking for. I've recommended Baobab Suites on here before. Its self catering apartments within a hotel with central pool/ restaurant facilities. Its up a hill but within walking distance to the Adeje restaurants too.

I haven't been myself but I've also heard good things about La Caleta. I think its walking distance from Costa Adeje. I looked into Royal Hideaway there which looks amazing but we ended up choosing Baobab instead as its closer to Adeje.

Thank you @Piratejenny99, will take a look at those suites

I would second the Costa Adeje recommendation. We haven’t stayed in La Caleta but have often walked to it from Costa Adeje for dinner, and there’s more going on in Costa Adeje plus you can always walk to Playa de Las Americas and get your beer in a boot.

I haven’t stayed at the Baobaob suiets but they do look nice. Most of the 4/5 star hotels near the front are good. Lots of reasonably priced restaurants with sea views.

Thank you, sounds like I am looking at the right area for us

I’m resurrecting this thread as our plans changed for the end of the year so didn’t end up going away. We may try to get away in the next few weeks. I appreciate accommodation options will be limited at such short notice but would still appreciate: any further thoughts re location (still favouring Adaje), and any other recommendations for accommodation with a decent sized pool.
We like to get out and about, so will probably hire a car, would also appreciate suggestions for places to visit/see any where on the island.

Thank you

I can recommend the LaBranda suites, half of the hotel is adults only and so very peaceful. A short stroll down to Fanabe beach too.
We went last Jan/Feb and had a fantastic time.
Wishing you a lovely holiday. Adeje is lovely

We’re off to GF Isabel in Costa Adeje for the 3rd time in February.
It has a big heated pool kind of sunk down in the centre of the resort.
It’s modelled on a Spanish hillside village.

You might find the bungalows don’t have quite enough kitchen facilities for your needs, we go half board , make our own dinner so the fridge comes in useful for keeping food ( and wine ) cool.

OMGitsnotgood · 09/01/2026 22:10

Thank you everyone. To clarify, we prefer SC as you tend to get more space overall plus a decent fridge but apart from breakfast and the occasional lunch we will eat out.

We often end up in a hotel to get a decent pool to swim in. I’d be happy just splashing around in anything but DH likes to be able to do some decent lengths.

if we do manage to get away soon, I appreciate that we won’t have much choice in accommodation so it’s good to have a list to look at just in case. Thanks again

Royal Sunset Beach Club, Playa Fanabe, Costa Adeje. Nice hotel, perfect location in a busy area right near the beach. Great walks all the way along the coast x

I understand you prefer self catering, OP, so do we, but if you like a large swimming pool you might like to treat yourselves to a night or two at the Gran Melia Palacio de Isora hotel, which has a very large pool indeed. I attach an aerial map - compare it to the size of other nearby pools!

Second this - great self catering set up and a decent pool.

I’ve stayed in Adeje and Playa De Las Americas and both are nice. We only go in the February half term and there definitely isn’t a ‘party vibe’ in PDL Americas! It’s all families and older couples enjoying some winter sun. There is a ‘strip’ at one end but that tends to only be a ‘thing’ in the summer months (as 22 year old me can attest!) My DP love Los Cristianos which is just a bit further along the coast. That tends to attract a slightly older crowd which is probably why DP like it!

The south tends to be less windy which is why I think it’s popular. You can pretty much walk between all three of these resorts via a costal promenade.

Regarding attractions, other than the zoos and water park, we hired a car and drove to the top of the volcano and had a walk about. That was an interesting day. A bit cooler up there too.

Have a great holiday!

Does DH need a proper swimming pool ( rectangle with lane markings and ropes ) for his lengths?

The pool at GF Isabel is large but round, it’s a good swim across though, no inflatables allowed and the bungalows have a good fridge size, from memory so do the apartments.

I’d recommend breakfast only there in your case, big choice of foods at breakfast, cereals, toast, tea, coffee, fried , cheese, the usual buffet choices.

OMGitsnotgood · 10/01/2026 08:32

@tanstaaflhe doesn’t need lane markings and ropes. Rectangular preferred but as long as there’s a decent length to be had other shapes are ok. He tends to swim just before the pool closes when it tends to be emptier or when it’s empty enough if the pool doesn’t close.
