Weekend with 2 year old up to 3 hours from essex

We'd like to go away for the weekend of DS's 2nd birthday, can anywhere recommend somewhere that has plenty of things for a toddler to do?

Sorry, I've only just seen these replies.
We're in Leigh-on-Sea. I'm not sure what we want really, he enjoys a proper beach (rather than the stones we have here) and loves animals, but mostly likes anywhere he can run around freely!
Last year we went to Colchester zoo, which was lovely and we could do that again but I'm thinking of maybe more of a weekend thing this time.
