Ideas for a week in Oct half term please

Hi

the last few years we’ve been lucky and had 2 weeks in Oct half term, we’ve been and loved to Peru, Japan and Borneo. This year we only have a week. We’d still like to go out of Europe and ideally avoid the US. Has anybody got any ideas please? We’d like warm, stuff to do. Have been considering South Korea, India or possibly Egypt but hoping for some other ideas! We’re quite adventurous and it’ll be diy rather than a tour. Thanks!

What about Sri Lanka? Or might be too far for a week. Lots to do though.

TimeforaGandT · 06/04/2025 17:15

Oman?

Thanks, we went to Sri Lanka a few years ago and loved it. Would love to go back but flights are mega money so sadly for a week I don’t think it will work this time but thank you!

Oman?

Thanks @TimeforaGandT , my husband and I went to Oman many years ago but haven’t been with our son. We did consider it a couple of years ago but landed on Jordan instead so I will have a look as I remember there was lots to do. Thanks!

I’m thinking about Namibia or Morocco for the following week…

HappySheldon · 06/04/2025 18:21

What's your max flying time?

Singapore is only 13 hours or so and there is loads to do! I'm from Oz and we used to go to Singapore for a long weekend, so for a week I'd personally not be daunted by the flight time, but it is a long way.m

Namibia on my list too but not sure whether I’d rather do 2 weeks there when we have it! Loved Morocco, so much to do,

We don’t mind long flights, once did Hong Kong for 3 days!! Much younger then but 13 hours would be fine. We’ve been before and I did look but not sure there is enough for us for a week that we’ve not done. Appreciate I’m not making this easy 🫣.
Other places we’ve been over the years and loved, the Yucatan, Cambodia, Vietnam, South Africa, The Rockies, Jordan, Japan, Indonesia.
I am still tempted by Egypt but wondering whether we’d prefer to do that for a long weekend, or the golden triangle in India.

Nile cruise? Perfect for a week, not too far, so much to see. We loved it. All ages.

Ooh that’s a good idea! Can you tell me how/ who you booked it through? Egypt is definitely a contender! Thanks

We booked through a small specialist company who are no more sadly. But our top tips are don’t choose too large a ship and preferably one with a bit of character (polished wood etc). We flew to Luxor, cruised down to Aswan and back. We flew down to Abu Simbel rather than take the coach and the view coming in was a life long memory. We didn’t do the hot air ballooning but those that did loved it. We also skipped a few excursions so you don’t feel you have to do everything. Trip of a lifetime.

We have been to Peru a few times. Not the best option if you have very small kids but fantastic (culture + nature) for kids 10+ yo. Try Arequipa, Cusco, and Sacred Valley. Choose food and hotel wisely and teach them something like birdwatching or hiking. Some options here https://www.hotel-molino-peru.com

We have taken the kids for Oct HT week to

Jordan
Oman - lots to do if adventurous, easily filled a week.
Egypt - def a cruise
Morocco

Other 1 week only trips we have loved (often with the double weekend)

Iceland
Svalbard - highly recommend.
Mexico
… Florida/NYork

I have flown further for a week, but I don’t like doing it and I think S.Korea would be a killer. That said I went to Japan for a week when a friend was living there!

Waffles21 · 10/11/2025 11:56

Thanks. We’ve been to Jordan and Iceland at different times of year. We ended up having a long weekend in Budapest which was fab. South Korea next year for 2 weeks so if anyone has been and has recommendations please shout! Thanks

I didn’t look at your original date… that was silly!

We really want the 2 week Oct half term as S.K is ideal then, but we are limited to summer/easter for longer trips.

Enjoy
