Mount Vesuvius and Herculaneum

How easy is it to navigate between these two attractions by public transport? Seems to be lots of tours but like the idea of more flexibility and cheaper to be honest! Also any tips for nice restaurants in Naples - not too fancy, just authentic and good vibes... Thanks!

Circumvesuviana train Sorrento to Naples has stops at Pompeii and Herculaneum. Very easy!

If you're at Herculaneum station the site is a shortish walk down the road, and the buses to Vesuvius leave from outside the station I think. We never made it up Vesuvius as we spent too long at Herculaneum though!

The public bus runs to Vesuvius from Pompeii, literally from outside the train station, but you need to pre-book tickets online yourself, a week or so in advance, in order to enter into the national park for Vesuvius. Lots of people who didn't have tickets took the bus up and couldn't go in. This is the cheapest option. Also possible to go up to Vesuvius using the shuttle at Ercolano station, but this is a bit more expensive than the option we did. Note that we spent a full day at Pompeii and a good 4 hours at Herculaneum, so wouldn't recommend trying to do Vesuvius as well on either of these days.
