Agadir or Marrakech

For an autumn break - which would you choose? Preferably a bit of relaxation and some sightseeing. But mainly lying around, reading and soaking up some sun.

The riads of Marrakech appeal but is it quite chaotic? I've been to Cairo and it was madness.

I've not been to Agadir but nothing could tempt me back to Marakesh. Very aggressive and hostile culture/haggling, chucked in with some sexual harassment and came home with a long lasting food poisoning bug!

I had a horrific time in Marrakech.

TheBlueGreyZebra · 06/02/2025 21:47

I am Moroccan.
Marrakech is very touristic but I've never been a big fan.
If you want to avoid being scammer, haggled, hassled, definitely choose Agadir.

I had a horrible Morocco experience in general but didn’t get further than the far north after crossing over from Spain. Sexual harassment and food poisoning on day one. Once recovered went straight back to Spain and what felt like civilisation. Never been back but if I did it would be Agadir and not independent travel.

Also, if you are going by yourself, avoid Morocco

I loved Marrakesh! Full of life and exotic. We went as an extended family with grandparents. Stayed centrally. Not really an RnR place.

RisingSunn · 06/02/2025 22:30

I’ve been to Marrakech - not very relaxing (but the riad I stayed in was lush). However I wish I had booked Agadir instead. My cousin went there and from the photos - it looked far more peaceful and better suited to me.

ColourByNumbers88 · 06/02/2025 22:31

Thanks everybody. I thought Agadir may be the place.

I've just returned from my 4th solo visit to Agadir, as a 50+ female. I love it, the people are so friendly, it is cheap and the beach promenade is lovely for a walk.

Proudmummy67 · 06/02/2025 22:35

I've been to both. Agadir is very quiet and more or less just has the beach.

I personally preferred Marrakech as you could have a mix of the hotel to chill in but also the hustle and bustle of exploring the city and souks etc. We also did a trip into the mountains.

Marrakech is hastle. I had a great time, I went in a group. It's not the place for single females or young women.

Ignore any opinions about Marrakesh from anyone who visited prior to COVID. Back then it was scam city and being hassled constantly. But in a bid to get tourists back after COVID, the government addressed it's reputation, and it's an entirely different place. I travelled there alone and independently a year ago, stayed in a riad right in the centre, and LOVED it! I wasn't hassled at all, was in the mad buzz of Jmaa el fna until midnight every night, and apart from a couple of pushy stall holders in the market, had absolutely no issues at all. The tourist police are a constant presence and the place is transformed.

My recommendation is a couple of full days in Marrakech, then get the bus to Essaouira for a beach stay and a really chill town.

Mardyybum · 06/02/2025 22:46

I disliked both. Agadir felt grubby and Marrakesh was just stressful (although we went pre covid so as pp mentioned it may have improved)
I certainly wouldn’t pick Agadir for the sunshine though, we went in July and the mornings were extremely foggy every day.

TiramisuThief · 06/02/2025 22:56

Marrakesh. There's nothing in Agadir except the beach. You can stay in a resort hotel in Marrakech outside the centre, or a riad if you want the hustle and bustle.

It's very touristy now, very safe, much more infrastructure than there used to be, more sanitary. But you'll queue at every popular tourist destination, some need advance tickets and they will be crowded.

TeamGeriatric · 07/02/2025 06:51

I went to both a very long time ago, Agadir is a beach town with no sightseeing, so Marrakech every time for me.

I completely disagree! I went there in 2019 with 2 other women and we had an amazing time. I went back last year and it was pretty awful

Hobbesmanc · 07/02/2025 06:57

We did a two centre Marrakesh and Agadir in September. Apart from the hellish airport arrival it was a lovely holiday and great value. Marrakesh is just amazing, so much to explore. Just be sensible. The transfer to Agadir was a bit tedious but we had an amazing hotel one of the Rui AI one's right on the beach.

Agadir has way more than the beach! I’ve been quite a few times as my husband is from there. It has been modernised recently and you can take a taxi or cable car to the mountains. Also has a new big water park if you’re into that kind of thing. And a big souk. Also can ask to visit the surrounding towns for a bit of sightseeing and to get recommendations for proper Moroccan food. Ask to go to the tagine place in banana village. It’s not fancy but the tagine is one of the best I’ve had!
