Switzerland Road Trip

Hi there, I'm planning a two week road trip from London to Switzerland. Possibly ending up at Lake Como if that's realistic in the timeframe. I have a 4 and 9 year old. Interested in lake swimming and short hikes and train rides. Would love any thoughts on itineraries, hotels, places to visit. Anything really! Thanks so much x

Myswitzerland.com is good for ideas. Bernese Oberland - .interlaken, Wengen, Kandersteg from where you can get to Rhone Valley -Zermatt to Geneva, Zurich to Chur, St Moritz, Lugano then Como?

Given your DCs ages I would fly to Switzerland rather than drive there and back because they could well grow to hate travelling in the car. And whilst Switzerland is lovely practically everything to buy is hideously expensive.

There are daily trains that go from Zurich down to northern Italy.

I went last year and only found it a little bit more expensive than here and the quality of everything was very high. The free travel passes hotels give out on arrival a really nice touch.

I’m not going to be much help on Switzerland, but I think a road trip is a great idea. Depending on where you’re coming from a ferry will be more interesting than the Chunnel. We spend a lot of time in the alps and there’s so much for kids to do. If it’s pricey (it will be in CH) head into Italy a bit earlier. Enjoy!

Hi, we did that last year . London, eurotunnel, France , colmar night stop,
Basel to Lake como, just remember to get Swiss breakdown insurance
And the services in Swiss ars amazing!
I can recommend Lake como , Airbnb it there.

There are at least a couple of ‘rollercoasters’, like wagons zipping around mountainsides. There’s one very close to the small and lovely Chur (also good for spotting the red Bernina Express if not using it).

We have done the road trip to Switzerland and Italy at those ages for my sons and loved it. Switzerland is expensive if you're eating out every night but if you're self-catering most of the time with the odd meal out it's not too bad. Just take some non-fresh food with you (anything branded that you like e.g. ketchup, kellogs, heinz as those sort of items are v priced) and stop off in a French supermarket for some fresh food on the way.
