Has anyone been to San Diego?

What is there to do there for a 4 year old and a baby of about 7 months?

Is it near beaches (Have no idea about the geography of the US)? Can you hire villas out there? (Trying to avoid hotels)

Is it near Disneyland?

Any advice would be very grateful - have looked on the Net but have not been very sucessful.

DPs have friends there so if no one knows i can find out- sure it's near disney as they went when visiting the friends

Its around 90-100 miles from Disneyland, I believe it took us a few hours to get there, just depends on traffic. Haven't been for years and years, though.

I've been to Sea world in San Diego although 15 years ago - it was great then so is probably even better now.

The San Diego zoo is world famous.

San Diego is right on the Pacific ocean. It's gorgeous.

Disneyland is nearer Los Angeles, but as Colin'sMommy said it's not that far away.

We once stayed at the Hotel Del Coronado. (I was there on a conference and my company paid for it.) It was gorgeous. Coronado is an island in San Diego, and it would be perfect for a holiday. I loved it! They have rentals on that website.

I have been to LA and san Diego and much prefered SD. The beaches are wonderful

San Diego is lovely. Sea Worl and the Zoo are probably the highlights, but a nicer city overall than LA. LA close enough to get to the theme parks (and that is probably all I would do of LA).

We went to San Diego in 1995. It's a really beautiful place and the zoo was fantastic.

We hadn't any kids then, anyway we stayed at "Humphreys Half Moon" hotel.It was gorgeous and right next to the marina - lovely walks and views.Also we had a family of ducks living outside our French windows!(guess they'll be gone by now!!!)

I hope you have a lovely time, I'm really jealous of you!I'm sure you'll love your visit, I really like the USA and I'd love to visit again sometime we get some money together!

Oooh lovely place! Went there about 5yrs ago and just had dd with us who was about 11months, were on way back from Hawaii and had left 2 boys at home. It was the first place where I kept wishing the boys were with us as it was such a great place for kids.
Zoo is fab, also there is a legoland.
Second Kates rec for Del Coronado. Kids programme looked great, very friendly to DD. One of the restaurants where you could have breakfast was right on the beach so kids could get down and play.
Going this year to California as loved our flying visit so much. Will spend about 4d in San Diego as loved it so much.
You will have a fab time

ooh : second SSd's recomendation for Humphreys : was there on my honeymoon in 1999. Stunning and the Ducks were still there and a very family friendly hotel - and a really great restuarant! Bit more accessible to the city than Coronado probably - that is more down at La Jolla. Wonderful wonderful zoo and sea world - great food - just loved San Diego
(Coronado is where they filmed some like it hot - beautiful hotel)

Thank you all for the feedback.

I have a friend who lives there who is expecting her first baby and I have not seen her for about 4 years. Shae has not met my childrne either so wanted to go and see her as well as explore a part of the US I have never been to.

We stayed there and had a great time. We stayed in the Beach Cottage motel (had kitchen etc) which was right on the beach - they may do suites of more than one bedroom. It's on a boardwalk and lots of restaurants etc nearby. Close to Sea World etc and quite reasonable. Free parking too. We also saw some fantastic cottages which were on a pier and had glass floors in parts so you could see the fish and sea below. Not sure what they were called but I'm sure a search on Google would help. Also local tourist board v helpful.

We lived in San Diego for a year in 2000. Had no kids back then but were there with our 2 year old in December.
Can't rate the hotels as we stay with family but San Diego is a great place for a holiday.
Just north of SD is Legoland at Carlsbad - Carlsbad is a nice wee beachy town (there's also an outlet village...)There's Balboa Park right in the middle of downtown and it has so much to see and do - it's great for kids and is right next to San Diego Zoo which is also fantastic. A wee bit further out is the wild animal park and you can travel around it on a little train. It's great fun.
There's also the Viejas Casino complex and shopping outlet which has a fantastic series of lighty up musical fountains that all of the kids strip off and play in.
You can also cross into Baja Mexico - great food, beaches and shopping in certain parts.
San Diego is really relaxed and friendly. You and your kids would enjoy it, I'm sure!
