Krakow or Sardinia?

We're going on a one-week trip with my wider family next summer, but we want to tack on a few days away on our own as a foursome first (two adults, two teens). There aren't that many choices for places that we can fly to direct from the UK and then directly onwards to the place we're holidaying with family and we've narrowed it down to two: Krakow or Sardinia (choice of Olbia or Cagliari). We've never been to Krakow or Sardinia, would like to go to both, and would only be going for 3-4 nights. It will be in mid-July. Any advice welcome.

Sardinia- beautiful beaches, seafood, islands to explore, expensive, not built up, outdoorsy.
Krakow- beautiful old city, lots to explore, pork and potatos, beer, cheap, Auschwitz, old salt mines.

Where is the place that you will be going with wider family? Are you looking for a different kind of break to that? Eg if it's a beach holiday, would you prefer a city break? I see Sardinia and Krakow as very different kinds of places.
