City break in October?

TeacherMcTeacherface · 18/08/2024 13:38

It's my 20th wedding anniversary this year and I've persuaded DH that we should go somewhere exciting for a few days in Oct half term.

We're on a budget so Rome is out of the question.

I've suggested either Paris or Amsterdam (never been to either)

Any recommendations for which one you'd choose? Or somewhere I haven't even thought of?

Been to both a few times but I highly recommend Amsterdam for a city break as a couple (or as a family).

Do a self guided walking tour to get the lay of the land and see the main sights

Rijksmuseum book ahead

Ann Frank House book ahead (it's complicated)

Van Gough museum (book ahead)

Boat trip (can plan on the day)

Take your pick from the many cute museums and attractions that dont require previousbooking. I've done Rembrandts House and the museum of our Lord in the attic House Church recently. There's a science museum (NEMO), a maritime one, a great zoo.

Chilling out in the 9 streets district which is great for shopping and eating

walk in vondelpark

got to eat at Foodhallen food market

Zahnsee Schaans day trip to see the windmills if you get time

There's also lots of jazz clubs and live music venues some to turn up to some to book in advance.

Rijstafel Indonesian feast is very Dutch

Plus pancakes for breakfast at pancakes Amsterdam or similar

Their Chips are a fab snack, much better than UK chips.

Go! I love Paris too and there's loads of great art and culture plus cool districts plus it's much bigger. I'd go back one day.

Amsterdam is fabulous. Another affordable city break that's lovely is Lisbon - great city and really surprisingly cheap when you get there.

Granada and Seville are beautiful cities, I went in October/November and had beautiful weather.
Seville is bigger so a bit more going on

Love the PP's username - great novelist! And they're right about Lisbon. Fabulous itself, with easy transport to a beautiful beach resort (Cascais) and/or the amazing town of Sintra. Quinta da Regaleira in particular is unbelievable: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Quinta_da_Regaleira

Istanbul is lovely weather wise at that time of year aa well as cheap.

What's your budget?

TeacherMcTeacherface · 18/08/2024 23:08

Ooh!! Loads of brilliant ideas. Again, thank you!

Going to spend a few hours tomorrow researching.

Verona and Lisbon have captured my interest. Both on my bucket list.

Someone mentioned Belfast and that would have been an option but I have been fairly recently. Brilliant city for a weekend away.

Excited now...
