Hiking in Greece?

Where is best to go if you're into hiking?

Which of the islands or the mainland?

I'd say go at a different time to August...

When did I say I was going in August?

I didn't and I'm not.

I asked where ...

Logic dictates that it is now 8th August and if I'm asking for tips on where to go, it won't be planned, booked, paid for and concluded within 3 weeks.

Oh never mind

There are some long trails on the mainland. Unless you go to Rhodes, there aren't enough interesting trails on the smaller islands for a week. We went hiking on Naxos. I think you'd only get 3 good days hiking and then it gets very samey. The beaches are nice though

try the Cicerone series of mountain books.

Btw, the mainland can get high and cold, so you might actually want to go in August if you're looking for peaks ;)

The mountains can be pretty bare so if the weather turns there isn't much shelter and the paths get slippery very fast

Are you looking for a long multi day hike or a couple of shorter day hikes? If you want a couple of shorter day hikes then Santorini is one of the most beautiful places I've ever been (not in peak season). Start in Fira and walk to Oia - there is nothing like it anywhere else in the world IMO. Then another day take the bus to Kamira and walk up to Ancient Thera. I'm sure there are some other lovely day hikes around too.

If you want a long multi hike you could do part of the Corfu Trail which I think is a 10 day hike across Corfu. I haven't done it yet but it looks beautiful and is on my to do list.

Thank you are you saying Rhodes does have enough hiking for a week to occupy you?

All great ideas. My usual hiking holiday involves lots of day hikes but open to longer hikes split up too.

Crete including the Samaria Gorge?

I've done a version of this kind of itinerary: www.exodus.co.uk/trips/greece-holidays/walking/contrasts-of-crete-walking/w07gi#itinerary

No idea about Rhodes, sorry! I was just going by size. A lot of the islands you can walk from coast to coast in a day. We've been to Naxos, Paros, Santorini (but sailing), round the Peloponnese (particularly on the North side it's really beautiful round the gulf), then up about as far Lamia through the mountains. We're geologists so are doing remote rock stops rather than long end-to-end hikes.

I wouldn't bother with Santorini. It's built up, a single geology so doesn't change much and is horrifically touristic.

You are a bit touchy! Your logic is flawed. If you got a bit of a wiggle on you could easily have been going this August, and some people plan their holidays a year or more in advance.

I would recommend Crete, but not in August, or July.
