October half term sun and adventure!

Holidayhop · 08/08/2024 08:53

we need an October break! DH hates flying but will do it, and needs sun and rest. Son ( teen) needs adventure. I need it to be reasonably priced! ( but am prepared to not be my usual super economy)
Please help! I have no idea At All and am overwhelmed with work and stuff.
if anyone can recommend a place I’d be super grateful.

We did Turkey last October half term, loved it and are returning to a different area this year. Lots of options at different budgets.

Holidayhop · 09/08/2024 07:49

Yes I’ve heard great things about turkey. For some absolutely bizarre reason that’s the one place DH has said a firm ‘no’ to.
I was wondering about Croatia? Or Italy?

You will find that lots of resorts will start to shut down end of October, do your research carefully.

Most of Europe is not necessarily beach temperature anymore, even Cyprus has it's cooler and rainy days that late in the year, so be realistic about it.

But I think Cyprus or the Canaries, maybe Morrocco, are a the best options.

AlexandraJJ · 09/08/2024 08:08

I’ve booked the Algarve for October half term

FusionChefGeoff · 09/08/2024 08:45

Morocco would be my start with adventures into the mountains

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 09/08/2024 10:04

We went to Tenerife a few years back in the Oct half term ( last week Oct) it was warm enough to walk about in shorts/ TShirt , go to the WaterPark

Went last year mid Oct .....it peed it down with rain. !

Twilightstarbright · 09/08/2024 10:43

What do you mean by adventure- hiking/water park?

Canaries are great in October or I would look at Morocco. If you fancy going further afield Oman?

Searchingforthelight · 09/08/2024 10:49

Have done October half term in lanzarote, absolutely wonderful, you may want a cardigan/ light jacket at night but otherwise lovely

CeeceeBloomingdale · 09/08/2024 10:56

Choose somewhere that is an all year round destination like the canaries, we did Ibiza one year and left on 31st October, the resort was closing down completely, in the few days we stayed we went from loads of restaurants to choose from to about 3. Even the supermarkets were winding down their stock including basics like bottled water. The sunbeds were being packed away around us.

OlympicsFanGirl · 09/08/2024 10:59

We are considering Tunisian for Oct half term.

3WildOnes · 09/08/2024 11:08

October half term is the perfect time to go to Egypt.

MiddleAgedDread · 09/08/2024 11:54

Have a look at Neilsons beach holidays which might offer the balance you all need (although it might be too expensive but you literally don't have to plan anything else until you get there and decide what activities - if any - you want to try).

MarisCapri · 09/08/2024 12:59

Mainland Spain, Balearics, Portugal are not reliably warm towards the end of October. Shorts and T shirt weather sometimes but not reliable sunbathing days. Depends what your DH means ‘sun’.

Morroco will be warmer, or the Canary Islands.

itsgettingweird · 09/08/2024 13:02

Canary Islands really for sun.

Lots of adventure - water sports. Visits up volcanoes and hilly villages. Water parks.

Start looking at where and when you've decided where I'm sure we can all suggest places to stay and things to book.

Holidayhop · 10/08/2024 15:23

Thank you everyone! DH vaguely mentioned Canary Islands - I’ll do some research.
thanks itsgetting wierd this is super helpful! Morocco also looks like it would be an adventure for teen so thank you. I’ll check out flights etc. we are currently dealing with yet more stuff so my metal holiday bandwidth is very narrow!

Oman. Plenty to do, perfect time of year to visit.

Wadi bashing, sand dunes, diving / snorkelling, mountains. Perfect weather in October.

NorthFaceofthelaundrypile · 10/08/2024 15:46

@longdistanceclaraclara - would you be able to give a bit more info on Oman. I’m interested in it for a 10 day/2 week Christmas or Easter trip. Did you stay in one place or travel around?

longdistanceclaraclara · 10/08/2024 15:51

@NorthFaceofthelaundrypile I lived there...

However if I was going on holiday I would base myself in Muscat. There is a good range of hotels now from relatively budget but not in the best locations through to some really stunning high end.

Easter is better than Christmas imo weather wise although starting to get hot. It can be rainy and cooler in December (it's still warm and usually beach weather but when you're used to a lot hotter for the rest of the year it feels cooler!). Both Christmas and Easter avoid Ramadan this year.

If you go for more than a week it's worth taking a trip down to Salalah which is in the south and a very different climate to Muscat, it's is lush and green, and very beautiful.

If you are there for a week there is plenty to do in and around Muscat.

NorthFaceofthelaundrypile · 10/08/2024 16:32

This is really helpful. We’d be diving, so Easter would be better - longer days, warmer water!
I’d also been looking at Jordan, so helpful to have other ideas.
I will start researching!

longdistanceclaraclara · 10/08/2024 17:50

Easter is perfect for diving, water is cooler at Christmas and the visibility can be poor. You'll likely get away with a thin shorty wetsuit by then. The Shangri La at Bar al Jissah has an on site dive centre. There are plenty of others but this is where I learnt to dive.

Jordan has been on my bucket list for a long time!

littleroad · 10/08/2024 17:55

Our half term is always mid October. We have got e away a few times. Algarve was warm but pools very cool. Ibiza was great. Warm weather and water was perfect. Still lots open to do also. Have also done Tenerife at that time and it’s been pretty warm and pleasant.

Holidayhop · 12/08/2024 09:00

Thank you! Oman sounds amazing. I’d love to get somewhere a bit more foreign as it would really give DS a boost. DH very nervous after medical issues, so it’s a bit if a balance!
