Humour me please, I'm bored waiting for a flight.

My worst was Tunisia in the 90's. Out of season, terrible food, felt like we were locked in a resort at night. Couldn't wait to go home.

Best - California road trip with the kids a few years ago. We all loved every minute of it. So much to do, the food was great and lots of swimming and lovely beaches. Monterey and San Diego were our favourite places.

Worst - Cape Verde two years ago. Very little to see outside the resort. Hassled a lot to buy stuff when going to the nearest town. Sea warm but with a strong undercurrent so mostly unsafe for swimming in and DH and I caught shigella on the second to last day (his birthday) the six hour flight home was fun 🤢

Best - Cape Town in 2012. We stayed with PIL as they still lived there then. Beautiful place. Loads to see and do. Went to our best friends' wedding there. Weather was stunning. Going back in May next year this time with our DC and I can't wait!!

Best - Best was probably my honeymoon in Indonesia, beautiful hotels, beautiful beaches, very different and lovely culture, great food. As a child I have very fond memories of staying in a cottage in Devon even though it was damp, and we all came down with norovirus, I still have great memories of all the places we visited!

Worst - Rhodes, pre kids, package holiday with DH - there was a heat wave, our accommodation was scuzzy with no air con and an ant infestation (it was that situation where you are on the coach from the airport making all the stops and you think god, what poor bastard is staying here - oh its us). I lost my purse, was tired all the time and our plane was re-routed coming home. It wasn't all awful, but that was def the worst one!

Best - Australia Great Barrier Reef, wildlife, rainforest, Sydney etc. Also Borneo, Costa Rica.

Worst - Week in Nice, easyjet lost my luggage but got it back about an hour before could get compensation but had needed to buy new things, and got food poisoning for 3 days. But MIL had paid for hotel so at least was very cheap.

mitogoshi · 07/08/2024 15:31

Best? Hard but probably Alaska, state ferry, train and RV for a month.

mitogoshi · 07/08/2024 15:32

Worst - Skegness, in the 90's with ex's family. Never been back, Blackpool is just behind, also ghastly

Polarnight · 07/08/2024 15:32

Worst - Egypt. Absolute shit hole of a country. Dreadful.

Best - Iceland. Jaw dropping scenery

LesFlamandes · 07/08/2024 15:33

We’ve had loads of great holidays. Best family holidays include Andalusia at Easter by train, Amalfi coast, Namibia, Zambia, British Columbia and New England. Also loved Asynt in the Highlands.

We’ve never had a disastrous holiday. But the Yorkshire Dales was very, very boring.

Whynottrythis · 07/08/2024 15:47

Best -
backpacking in Egypt, I can't believe so many people here didn't like it! I had an incredible time!
safari in South Africa,
Oman.

Worst -
cruise around the Canaries over Christmas. Loads shut, it rained, family argued a lot.
Prague. I got food poisoning.

OpalOwl · 07/08/2024 16:00

Best- Tanzania safari, amazing wildlife and great people.

Worst- Benidorm with the in laws.

Polarnight · 07/08/2024 16:41

Egypt is a hole
Desert, illness, filthy towns and cities, illness, leering men, illness, being harrassed to buy stuff, illness, being harrassed to enter shops, illness.

Never again.

FurForksSake · 07/08/2024 17:34

Best - Thailand probably, or a week in autumn on the Black Isle in Scotland in a wooden chalet, magical.

Worst - we are just back from zante, I've got mal de disembarkation syndrome from a boat trip, the accommodation wasn't as good as pictures and the island was very pretty but not much to do.

I don't think I'll go to Tunisia after trading this !

My best holiday was staying in a gite in Normandy France. They had lots of animals: alpacas, goats, sheep, miniature ponies, donkeys, dogs, cats guinea pigs and rabbits. The owners of the gite let my young teen DS help to feed the animals every day and showed him how to make delicious goats cheese. The sun shone every day, we were all so happy, lots of local attractions to visit and the alpacas especially were so relaxing. DS was 16 at the time and stressed out about his upcoming exams. It was the May half term before his GCSE's and it relaxed him. It was also the last holiday he wanted to come on with us until he was much older. We all look back on that particular holiday with fondness.

I haven't really had any horrible holidays. I've been lucky. I had a really rainy holiday in August when DC were quite young in Jersey but we just found indoor activities to keep the DC amused.

On multiple occasions DH was offered a few camels in exchange for the ‘use’ of me for the night…

A cheap holiday is not worth the harrasment or disgusting attitudes of the local men towards women.

NCTDN · 08/08/2024 08:35

@Malahide the use of you?! Shocking. Angry

Best holidays with DH were Costa Rica (Arenal, Monteverde, and a 5* hotel near Manuel Antonio), Yellowstone and Glacier NPs, and Borneo. In terms of cities I loved visiting Washington DC and Amsterdam. Oddly enough I also have great memories of a cottage holiday in North Wales in October 2012, even though it rained most days!

Best holidays with DC were Norfolk x2 - lovely cottages, good weather and the kids were young and adored the beaches. Also US (White mountains of New Hampshire) with extended family in the US. DC loves playing with their cousins, the house we rented was beautiful as was the scenery.

Not had any disastrous holidays but Norfolk in April 2015 when DS was a baby was quite difficult - not amazing weather and he was unsettled by being away from home and would only sleep on me. Centre Parcs in January 2018 when DD was 3 was also underwhelming - he liked the swimming but otherwise didn't want to do any activities and it was cold, he kept asking when we were going home. Also campsite in Brittany in 2022 - nice enough but too much of a big holiday park vibe for us and no English speaking kids for DC to play with and we also got fed up of French food.

LadyGaGasPokerFace · 09/08/2024 04:15

Worst - Tunisia too. Absolutely hatred the place. What you had plated for breakfast was seen again for lunch. The food was repetitive and boring. The resort was full of Russians who’d leave their cigarette butts stubbed out in the sand on the beach, you’d be effectively walking through a giant ash tray 🤮

Best - Antigua. My dh proposed to me there. Not only that, but we met lots of lovely people on holiday and it was so much fun. The resort was fabulous and the food and people were amazing. Some great memories were made there.

Best- three different holidays- skiing in kitzbuhl (sp?) Austria over a new year, just the best time. Montenegro, amazing food, and a log cabin in Cornwall when the dc was younger, perfect weather and packed so much into the week.

Worst- hands down a last minute 3 night break to Pontins. We came home after one night. We realised why it was so cheap- it was hell on wheels!
