Port d'Alcúdia or Calas de Mallorca?

Anyone know Majorca pretty well?

I'm having my first solo mini break in the sun in October. I've narrowed it down to two hotels, which are much of a muchness. So now I'll consider the two areas and ask which is the nicer. I'm thinking safety, beaches, things to do (I enjoy boat trips and it's my dream to see dolphins in their natural habitat - something that's never happened on all the boat trips I've ever been on!), and very importantly for me, somewhere that doesn't have a tacky British vibe. I'd also prefer it not too busy.
I can revisit my search if I've missed the mark with these two resorts. But your input would be much appreciated, as I've never been to Majorca.
Thanks very much.

We stayed at Port D’Alcudia last year. It was lovely but a little run down in areas and quite spaced out. The hotel was a good ten min walk to the beach but the beach was really great and very long! It’s a quiet area, a little too quiet for us but the old town of Alcudia was the highlight. Overall, we wouldn’t go again but glad we went. We prefer Sa Coma, Cala Bona, etc. which are on the Calas De Mallorca side of the island. Santa Ponsa is also really nice. Have a fab time!
