My DH had an accident and was also very ill . We are hoping by October he will be good to spend a week in some sun. Thinking Spain or Italy . We won’t be renting a car so somewhere commutable from an airport , quiet and nice to walk around. He possibly needs someplace not to many steps or hills . Any ideas ? Tia

Estepona is easily accessible from Malaga and mostly flat. The area around the beach/marina is completely flat and so are the main shopping and restaurant streets. As you move inland from the beach, the old town is up a modest slope. My DM finds it fine and she’s not in great shape. There’s a lovely Sunday market down at the marina and one of our favourite places is Orchadium Estepona (the orchid house).

Look at Cala Bona in Majorca. A very flat and accessible place. There are hotels and apartments with adaptations for disability, such as the "Hotel Cala Bona" (not the most original of names). It's an hour from the airport but you can get there by public bus and there are other buses to several other towns. Early October you can expect daily highs of 28°, down towards 25° towards the end of the month.

Thank you I will have a look at that too . It’s good to hear recommendations. Wd have been to Majorca before and both like it . Always hired a car though before .

Another vote for Estepona. We go at least once a year either May or December/January. Always nice weather and I think October is a lovely month to go, quieter but as a working town everything is open and lively. It is beautifully kept, the Paseo is a delight to walk up and down, all flat and plenty of places to stop and sit. The shopping street and restaurants are one street back from the Paseo.

A direct bus gets you from Malaga Airport to the bus station in Estepona for about a tenner each or £80 or so one way on a private transfer. The local bus goes up and down the coast to San Pedro, Puerto Banus, Marbella and so on. In the other direction you can take a bus to La Linea and walk across the border to Gibraltar if that's your thing. There is also a fab train journey to Ronda from the train station in San Roque. Great day trip.

Can you tell I like it there?

Ok definitely going to check Estepona out . Wd are not going to book it for another little while as he needs to be signed off by his surgeon but fingers crossed . It’s nice to have something to Plan for

If you're interested, there is a good FB page called "Estepona info and chat". You can ask any question about the area and the members are very helpful, most of whom actually live there.

Wherever you decide to go, I hope your DH gets well and you have a nice time together.

@hastalav thank you I will check that one one . Thanks for the good wishes . It’s not an easy time . He is not a good patient 😜

Sicily is lovely in October and you could get a package which includes transfers, so you don't need to rent a car. If hills are a problem I'd recommend Syracuse or Palermo. Alternatively what about the Canary Islands? Gran Canaria is nice and warm in October - either Maspalomas/Meloneras or Puerto de Mogan are both nice (the former is more modern and a bit soulless IMO, but a lot of people like it and it has a long, flat promenade).

Beechtree123 · 23/06/2024 20:29

@cheezncrackers thank you for those ideas too . Am adding them all to a list to review

I would recommend Alicante. It's a very compact city with a great beach. 20 min taxi ride from the airport. Some lovely hotels and apartments. Great food. Weather could be fab in October.
