Hello! I’ve been trying to plan a weeks holiday at the end of August.

We have finally narrowed it down to Rugen, at the top of Germany or Ruhpolding in Bavaria. Found a nice Air b and b in both…

Which do you think will be warmer and enough to do for kids ( aged 1 and 7)…..thinking swimming, small walks, towns, cafes….

If you’ve been what was the weather like?

Maybe I’m overthinking this, thanks!

Rügen obviously has beaches and the small towns on the island that you can explore and is popular with tourists.

Ruhpolding is a small village in the middle of nowhere and although there are mountain walks there is not much else to do there. If you are looking at that part of Bavaria (which is very close to the Austrian border) you could also consider some larger villages and towns in Austria that are more geared towards tourism and where there will be more to do. Lofer, Maria Alm, Saalbach-Hinterglemm, Zell am See or St Johann in Tirol are all within 90 mins or so from Salzburg Airport, or 3 hours from Munich.

Bavaria will be lovely and warm and you can swim in lakes (and sunbathe beside them) in the afternoons.

Oh thanks yes we were looking at Austria initially but the reason we’ve honed in on Ruhpolding is that there is a nice small chalet with 3 bedrooms available there…with a garden, that we can afford! We’re taking my mother…so finding somewhere affordable in Austria with 3 bedrooms seems almost impossible!

Even if the weather isn't good enough to swim in the sea, you will have indoor and outdoor pools which are a mile better than any English swimming pool.

I agree, Ruhpolding is a bit isolated.

Rugen is great. Steam train and regular train around parts of the island. Submarine to visit, treetop walk, piers, boat trips.

misszebra · 27/05/2024 18:10

you do realise Bavaria is in Germany don't you...

hooplahoop · 27/05/2024 18:17

Hi Walking mum. We stayed in 3 bedroom apartment with 2 balconies last summer in Mayrhofen in Austria. Would really recommend if you’d like the details . It wasn’t too expensive .

Hi catmack16, thanks that’s good to know about Rügen…have you been then? Whereabouts did you stay, was it packed with crowds?

Yes went last summer. It was nicely busy but not overwhelming. One day of rain but the rest was fine, not hot but around 22/23 degrees and we could swim in the sea. We stayed in Sellin right by the pier which was great. Binz seemed busier and might be harder work.

FatArse123 · 27/05/2024 19:25

Mittenwald in Bavaria is an absolutely gorgeous little town, I am not sure about watersports, but it has some great walking.

Ok that sounds good…our worry was that Rügen might be really grey/cloudy/cold…were you in a hotel or apartment? We’re looking at an air b and b near Alt Reddevitz/monchgut which is near Göhren.

Hi midgetastic, wow pushing 40! That would be too hot with a baby and 83 year old I think! Was that in August? Whereabouts were you in Bavaria?
