Travel abroad after appendicitis?

One of my kids had appendicitis at the end of last week. I can't decide whether to stay at home or risk taking them to Europe this weekend for the week. Medical opinion was divided in hospital. I'm leaning towards not going, but it would be disappointing if they are much better by the weekend.

Presumably, I will have to amend <and pay a fortune> the travel insurance. Supposedly the greatest risks are straight after surgery.

Any thoughts or experience in this matter? Thanks

Just in case If flights are involved I’ll offer you the following, it’s from a (I think) US site and other sources give slightly different figures.

“The recovery period after an appendectomy can vary depending on the individual and the type of surgery performed. In general, patients are recommended to wait for at least 7 to 10 days before flying. However, this waiting period may be longer if there are complications during the surgery or if you have underlying health conditions. Always follow your doctor's advice and get clearance before booking any flights.”

My child was back in hospital 9 days after having his appendix out. He had sepsis and was really ill. I wouldn't risk it.

Ok- that's interesting reading. Thanks. She's already on strong antibiotics - but will keep a close eye on her.

cancel, claim on your insurance and rebook later

I guess it's a bit late to be posting as you should probably be away by now. You almost certainly won't be able to get travel insurance for this unless taking out a new policy with a specialist insurer

I would have rang my travel insurance to discuss. If in doubt claimed and rebooked.

Good to go insurance seem to cover many existing medical conditions and have an added waiting list policy you can add on if you are still under a Consultants care waiting for tests.

Did you go?
