Llandudno or Scarborough?

Hello!

My lovely new gf is having a terrible time atm and I want to take her away for a couple of nights over the bank holiday. Sadly my budget only stretches so far!

Llandudno and Scarborough are both an equal distance from us (Yorkshire), but I've never been to either. Which do you prefer? Or is there somewhere else you'd recommend?

All I'm looking for is some good salty chips and a walk along the pier. Bonus points for cheesy cabaret/bingo.

Definitely Llandudno.

I would go to Whitby over Scarborough personally

If you go to Llandudno you will get the shops etc and more going on along the promenade, but if you fancy a bit of peace and quiet, a reasonae cafe and pubic toilets and a sandier beach head to West Shore

Scarborough every day of the week.
Caledonia travel do some great trips on a reasonable budget by coach. Or if driving Scarborough again.
The south cliff gardens have been restored and the view from the Esplanade is breathtaking. We regularly go for the day or a few days.

Scarborough.
You can go on a day trip to whitby
Scarborough has a nice art gallery, interesting small museum and a sort of arts centre all very cheap to get in and it’s a nice short walk between them.
Castle (not so cheap unless English heritage member) and grave of Anne Brontë in nearby church yard.
Peasholme park at one side of town and miles of cliff garden paths at the other side.
Town centre isn’t great anymore but there’s north bay and south bay for the actual seaside bit. North bay is quieter. South bay has all the seaside stuff and harbour.

I love both places but from what you have said I would vote Scarborough. More of a typical seasidey fish n chips n bingo place. Whitby is close by and lovely too, but last time we went we found it a tad expensive, probably due to being so busy with tourists. Llandudno is a nice place, definitely worth a visit, but i would say a bit of a trek from where you are, depends on how long you would like to go for really.

Neveranynamesleft · 20/05/2024 23:24

Maybe take a look at Southport ?

AdaColeman · 20/05/2024 23:42

Scarborough for the fish and chips, and lovely Yorkshire friendliness.
Llandudno if you like goats.

Llandudno is lovely but it does tend to attract the older generation. That sounds awful I know but it has a long flat promenade with plenty of seating along its length and lots of hotels and guest houses with sea views, meaning that it’s perfect for those that can’t walk far and just like to sit and watch the sea. Having said that we only live about 90 minutes away and often go for the day. It’s great for little ones as there is plenty of room for them to ride their scooters safely along the prom and there is some sand for them to play on when the tide is out.
I’d be more than happy to go for a weekend but I wouldn’t want to stay for any longer than that unless I was intending to travel further a field in the day. I can’t imagine that the night life is up to much but it might be different on a Bank Holiday weekend.
Just to add - there is a pier which is a bit rundown nowadays and there is a great little fish and chip shop right by where you get on the tram to go up the Great Orme.

What about Cromer Norfolk, that has a Victorian pier, there might even be a show on at the end of pier theatre. Cromer is also famous for its crabs and seafood. Lots to see and do in the surrounding area too.

I've not been to either but I'd definitely choose the north over Wales. I like northerners.

SinisterBumFacedCat · 21/05/2024 00:10

Scarborough is fantastic

TheSoundThatIWasHearing · 21/05/2024 00:27

Llandudno is gorgeous. And loads to do in the area. On the doorstep of Snowdonia.

Scarborough's Fish Pan for fish and chips eat upstairs and the staff are always lovely and will move you into the window when those seats are available.
Flamingo Bay cafe on the sea front is fab and I know The Harbour Bar is famous for ice cream but The Holy Cow, a little further along, is the best place to buy ice cream. we have been going for ages and have never ever had bad service the owner and staff are always really friendly
Nearby Filey has become massively popular in recent years too for a day out.

Neveranynamesleft · 23/05/2024 23:03

Wonder if we'll ever find out where they went....?!

Clearinguptheclutter · 23/05/2024 23:05

Both are nice but probably Scarborough.

My son is from near Llandudno. Had a weekend in Scarborough recently. Said that it was lovely.
