Does this place exist?

I’m looking for somewhere to go in late July but am stumped so asking for inspiration. We’re a family of 4 - me DH DS (20) and DD (17). Budget is £8-9K ideally for two weeks. We love Greece but went last year and the last couple of days got up to just below 40 🥵. We like:
villas with private pool or hotel
high 20s to low 30s temperature
preferably beach/lake nearby
happy to drive abroad
nice places to eat in the evening, bit of a bar, but no banging nightclubs.
not France - love it but been a lot 😊.
sightseeing would be good but not a must, lovely scenery more of a pull for this holiday.

Does this holiday exist? I keep coming up with places that will likely be too hot/risk of rain and also not sure if the budget is realistic.

Thanks in advance.

@MrsSkylerWhite I’ve been to Cascais and we’ve just got back from Porto! Loved it there.

Corsica or Sardinia. Yes, I realise Corsica is French but thought you might not rule it out.

minipie · 10/04/2024 23:14

I was going to say Lake Garda - may be hot but unlikely to be as baking as the Greek islands.

Alternatively if you wanted to stick to Greece, the Sporades (Skiathose Skopelos and my favourite Alonissos) don’t tend to be quite as hot as further south.

TBH it is really difficult to find somewhere that definitely won’t be rainy but also definitely won’t be too boiling.

Corsica and Sicily will be high 30's so very hot as will anywhere in Greece.

I'd head for Austria or Switzerland. Maybe one of the lakes like Zell Am See. Loads to do and stunning scenery, lovely and warm without being stifling and not crowded. Nice villas with pools and if you have a car then you can stay out of the tourist centres which will make accommodation a bit cheaper. We also enjoy trips to the Italian Alps but it might be too rural for what you're after.

Or Sweden, Norway may be around mid 20's.

Jurmala, Latvia

Cape Verde, we’re going back again this year, can’t wait! We paid 8.5k including upgrade to transfer, luggage etc for two weeks AI all inclusive and in a 5* hotel.

BestMug · 10/04/2024 23:54

Italian lakes tick all your boxes.

"not France - love it but been a lot 😊."

How about just over the border - either northern Italy or Switzerland?

Anywhere along the coast from Monaco to Genoa and Pisa you will find lots of villas with pools and you're never too far from the sea and there are a mix of sandy and pebbly beaches. Also, the food is generally very good indeed.

The other suggestion would be Switzerland. Somewhere around either Lake Zurich or Lake Geneva. Plenty of water sports to do and sightseeing etc, also many great places to eat and lots of cultural things to do in places like Zurich and Geneva.

Also, Swiss trains are really great if you fancy a day out somewhere and don't want to drive. One example is the Jungfraubahn, this goes from Interlaken (half way between Geneva and Zurich) which goes to the top of the Jungfraujoch which still has snow in July.

I was thinking North Italy too

Tenerife hits your requirements, not as hot as the mainland in summer typically.

Plenty for young adults to do, plenty for older ones too or just chill out. We stayed in a hotel with 6 onsite restaurants to choose from or plenty others to walk to in Costa adeje

Can I ask what hotel this was?

I want a holiday now 😄

Menorca would fit your requirements, I think. It can get hot, but not as hot as Greece, and there's usually a nice breeze.

There's no end of villas to choose from, and most resorts will have a choice of restaurants and bars, but nightclubs are few and far between.

Try Son Bou, Santa Tomas, Playas de Fornells, Arenal d'en Castell. All have good beaches, a choice of villas (often with amazing views) and some restaurants/bars. They tend to be quite quiet resorts (although can get busy on the beaches in the height of the season) , but have good bus links to get out to see more of the island, or car hire is easy and the roads are great.

We were in Mallorca September the year before last - Port Soller - it's beautiful and have been before, but it was in the 40s and too hot to do the hiking we wanted to do. It had hit 50 on the terrace of our hotel the month before.

Italy? Will still be hot, but shouldn't be Greece hot, also anywhere else in Europe? I loved Munich last summer, it's a great city, and would be a good base to explore the Black Forest, castles etc. Or Austria is stunning? Slovenia is also on my list...

Slovenia is one of the most beautiful places I have ever been to!

if it gets too hot there is always a cool lake to jump into

AvonCallingBarksdale · 13/04/2024 15:29

Just popping back - I think northern Italy is coming out as a firm favourite, especially with potential to pop over to Switzerland. We’ve been to Sweden in the summer and it was v pleasant temperatures. Really fancy Norway for the northern lights but think that’s a winter trip.

We are planning a tour of the alps this summer, which might work for you too. There are some gorgeous hotels/resorts in the Austrian alps and Dolomites (northern Italy).

LoreleiG · 13/04/2024 16:57

Northern Spain?

talkingteapots · 13/04/2024 18:11
