Drinks package on MSC cruises

So we went on a cruise with TUI last year. We all paid for the drinks package, but there was nothing stopping us from ordering two drinks at the bar.

we are cruising with MSC this summer but haven’t taken the drinks package because of the cost for three adults and a teenager. But if one of us had the drinks package, couldn’t we order two drinks anyway?

No, it doesn't work like that. If one person has a drinks package, everyone in the cabin / booking must too.

Otherwise people will just be getting free drinks for their family members 😉

We have done 3 msc cruises without drinks packages. We bought a few drinks during the evenings and in total spent less than £250 over 2 weeks. We aren't big drinkers though and were overall happy with the free juice, water, tea and coffee provided.

Yes that’s why I haven’t taken the drinks package. With TUI, we got to choose who had it (all of us!).

The price with MSC was so much higher. I thought we’d be better of PAYG

The cheapest time to get the drinks package is on booking, you can often get get deals then. After that it becomes very expensive.

WHAT?

For PAYG, I think it depends on what you get in your drinks package and then see if it’s worthwhile for you. As an example, we mainly sail Royal Caribbean. In that drinks package you get alcohol, cocktails and soft drinks as well as proper coffee, bottled water and freshly squeezed juices. That made it worthwhile for us but you have to pay for everyone in your cabin. They are wise to one person paying for a package and multiple people using it. They’ve seen it all before which is why if one person buys, you all do.
