Holiday in Mauritius

Hi All,

Anyone with experience of taking kids to Mauritius..they are aged 3 and 1.

My concern is Mosquito bites, they really love me and bite away at me but I am hoping my girls have gone to their daddy on this part..is there any advice on how to prevent and also treat if they are bitten…any names for tried and tested products would be helpful.

We are going to take some plugs for the room but would it be better to cover the kids with full nighties at night?

Any general advice on Mauritius is also appreciated.

Thank you

Full nighties won't help much, as the mosquitoes will find the gaps.

Plug-ins are generally effective, we find almost everywhere (only been to Mauritius once and don't remember a big mosquito problem). Your hotel may also provide them, in which case use them as well.

Any pharmacy will sell bite remedy sticks for the itching. There are some mosquito-borne illnesses in that part of the world, but the pharmacist should know what to look for. Don't worry, thousands of people have a great holiday there every year.

Mauritius itself is lovely, with a great mix of English and French languages. But if you have never been to the tropics before, take care with the sun. Factor 50 on necks and shoulders at all times!

It's a long flight even when going direct though worth it when you get there.

The air con in the hotel will stop the mosquitos but if staying elsewhere I'd make sure they have nets hanging over the beds. I get bitten a lot.

Enjoy the holiday. Stunning country. Gets incredibly hot but from now until Sept is raining season from memory. Summer there is during Christmas in the Uk,

I don't drink the tap water - but am super sensitive.

The area Pereybere has the softest sand in the whole island.

I have been, first with an 18 month old and then again with a 2 and 5 year old and then again with older kids.

We had very few mozzies in the room as we were careful about keeping doors and windows shut so they didn’t get in. One or two did make it in so we had a pre-bedtime mozzie hunt and mostly found them.

Dinner time was probably the worst time for bites so best to cover up arms and legs then and put repellent on any exposed bits. Non Deet based for kids. Also a good anti histamine cream for bites - we use a French one Apaisyl.

Have to admit we hardly left the resorts so can’t give much advice on Mauritius itself. We stayed at Lux Belle Mare, le Cannonier and Long Beach. All good with kids.

Definitely get overnight direct flights if you can.
