Marrakesh/ Morocco/ desert itinerary?

I’ve always wanted to go to Morocco and in an ideal world would fit in a day or two in Marrakesh, a desert camp experience and then maybe a hotel with pool to relax for another few days. Is this possible? Has anyone been to Marrakesh AND into the desert in a week? Will start researching properly but if anyone has done it or knows this isn’t a great idea then please do shout!

Have you looked at Intrepid, Exodus or Explore trips? These travel companies all have one or more small group week long trips in Morocco through the desert. You wouldn't get a lot of down time though, may need to tag on a few extra days to chill at the end. It's definitely more expensive to take an organised tour than to self organise, unless you are travelling alone. You could also look at their itineraries and book it yourself.

Be aware that a lot of the usual desert places that visitors went to have been damaged due to the earthquake last year. If you’re going to Marrakech, spend some time in a riad rather than a modern hotel.

Yes we went last year to Marrakech (stayed at the Iberostsr which we booked via Easyjet). I can highly recommend Agafay Luxury Camp, they picked us up from our hotel and dropped us back at the airport (but can drop off or pick up wherever you need). I booked via Booking.com and then messaged them to arrange the pick up, they also do camel rides and quad bike riding. It was a really great addition to our trip.

there Are quite a few hotels just outside the medina that have big pools to lounge around but are an easy 10/15 walk into the main square so you could have the best of both worlds.

Have a look on viator as they do a number of 2/3 day trips to desert, so you could combine one of these with a few days in Marrakech quite easily

Ok thank you - good to know this is a possibility. And if we can have the lazy pool hotel bit whilst being in Marrakesh itself then even better. Will look at the tours but we will only have one week max because of school holidays so they might not work.

Yes. Did this years ago. Stayed 3 nights in a riad in the old town of Marrakesh, then we rented a car and drove over the Atlas mountains to Ouarzazarte for 1 night. The Atlas film studios there are well worth visiting, plus there's the Kasbah.

We then drove to Zagora, which is a small outpost for the desert, and stayed a night. Camels came to our hotel next day to collect us and we rode into the desert for a night under canvas, before driving back to Marrakesh and airport.
