Off the beaten track Greece

Looking for somewhere to go in Greece in September for a few days (possibly a week) just me and DP. Would like somewhere away from the usual resorts. Needs to be beautiful, quiet, great swim spots, maybe some history/archeology, small boutique hotel preferred.

Any recommendations?

I’ve not been yet (we are going this summer) but I would say that the Peloponnese region might fit your criteria. We are going with similar criteria to you and it seems to fit the bill.

Paleokastritsa in the north of Corfu is gorgeous. We stayed in a top floor room at the Apollon Hotel which wasn’t at all fancy but had the most stunning sea views.

We are going to the Peloponnese this summer.

Mani or Monemvasia might suit you? Get a car, there is masses of archaeology to go and see.

Halki, an island near Rhodes. There is one hotel, 3 beaches and a castle. It's stunning.

Loggos in Paxos. Quiet, beautiful, great food

Amorgos? Steep and rocky southern Aegean island with a historic Chora and a 900 year old monastery clinging to the cliff face. Stunning views, great swimming and snorkelling, mostly pebbly beaches. The Big Blue was filmed there. Definitely off the beaten track! No super luxury hotels though.

Any Greek island if you go self catering and have a car. Ime the resorts are easy to avoid, even the big ones and all of the islands have quiet beaches and interesting towns. Just check Google maps when booking. I can’t advise on hotels though since we have always done Airbnb for a villa with a pool.

We stayed in Peloponnese last year and it was stunning, our favourite holiday we’ve ever been on. I’d go there again in a heartbeat. DS still talks about it now.

ETA we stayed at a hotel called the Akti Taygetos in Kalamata, not sure if it would be described as boutique or not but it was lovely.

Another vote for Halki. We’ve been three (?) times I think. Always in an apartment though. It’s lovely, small, quiet, the Venetian architecture is beautiful. Hopefully it hasn’t changed much since we were last there over 15 years ago!

Thanks, some great suggestions that I hadn’t thought of. Will investigate further!

Pelopponese, Paxos or Alonnisos - all beautiful with Greek charm. More to see and do in the first one - the others are gorgeous for walking but less in terms of sights.
