mobile phone in New York

How do I get my mobile phone to work in New York?? Do I have to do something to it? It is on the orange network. If I go into the mobile phone shop in town and ask them will they think I am mad? I know it doesnt work in the USA because tried it last year, but I just need it to work for emergencies...am travelling with one child, leaving DH behind, but meeting older daughter in New York. Any info would be greatly appreciated, eg do I get a different sim card?

First of all, it has to be a tri-band phone. Google your phone model number, and you should be able to find out.

Then you need to check your tariff to see if it is set up for international calls.
