Hi everyone,

Travelling to Crete for the first time with family in April. I have Santander Edge Up account which charges no fees on all foreign transactions and withdrawals. I'm looking at withdrawing over there but need to know locations of free atms if any. How is peoples experience of paying by card in Hersonissos area? Santander charge the Mastercard exchange rate which I've checked and it's far better than any I can get here.

How much would you recommend as a starting point? We are all inclusive and have a hire car.

I'd take €250 and then use the card wherever possible. I use a revolut card which has no charge.

From what I've seen, all Greek bank ATMs charge €2-3 for a withdrawal unless it's from an account at the same bank, regardless of how much you take out. However, they have to tell you the fee before you press OK, so if you don't like the charge you can try another ATM and see it's slightly cheaper. On the other hand, maybe €3 isn't going to spoil your holiday as much as walking for half an hour trying to find one that only charges €2.

Also, stick to ATMs that are attached to a branch of a proper bank. Avoid the Euronet ATMs and others that are just sitting around on the street in convenient locations, as they give you a terrible exchange rate.
