Barcelona would provide the trips, but you wouldnt get the pool though you could use the beach. I have been there (in the winter) with a teenager and it worked well. Again you could combine with somewhere else - say Girona where some of the cheaper flights go....its inland but if you have a pool who cares.

I dont have teenagers any more.

Malta is stunning, like anywhere there are places to avoid. Of course there is a limit to what you can do and see as it is a small Island but although we have been loads (have family there), we always discover something new and interesting. The view of Valetta from Senglea harbour where there are restaurants is stunning. And as for the sea around Gozo and Comino - turquoise and idyllic. Also plenty of fun cliff jumping spots :). Drivers much better than in Italy from my experience. Just avoid the usual resorts and if u dont like it too hot, go in The shoulder season

We did 10 days there and loved it. I know it always come out in the "worst holiday destination" threads but I always come out to support it! We went to so many different bits and saw loads of fascinating museums, gardens, forts, prehistoric sites. All really easily accessible by bus. Would happily go again and include Gozo and more boat trips next time as well.

And we had good food. Some excellent rabbit stew, there was a broad bean dip that came out in loads of places that I really liked, and savoury pastry snack you could gey everywhere for lunch but I forget the name.

Went to Malta about 8 years ago with two teens 18 and 16.
I loved it. Stayed just outside the city, on the harbour and walked into Valletta each evening. Love history and old buildings and churches so was happy just wandering around. Quite stunning.
Youngest wasn’t bothered and preferred to stay by the pool but the other was happy to come with me. I thought Valletta was beautiful and Mdina is well worth a visit.
Didnt care for the beach resorts when visited for the day. Nothing special.
You either love it or hate it. I loved it but probably more of a culture holiday and not for teens.

I don't think it's the place to go if you are wanting a beach holiday, a sunny lying by the pool holiday or could be for sure but there are very few beaches in Malta. We've got it booked for Easter, but now worrying a little after everyone has slated it. We have 9 nights there and currently only have the first 4 nights booked in Valletta, we have the Underground Valletta and Hypogeum tours booked already. Then I think we are going to go to Gozo and see Good Friday parades there and then a couple of nights in Mdina at the end. Fingers crossed we enjoy it.

You plan sounds fab :)Easter is an interesting time to go. Go to Gigantia on Gozo. In Mdina be sure to have cake at Fontanella cafe - great view

Re beach holiday, It depends what the idea of a good beach is. Malta’s beaches are mainly stoney/rocky (which we prefer) but that comes with crystal clear, blue sea and great places to jump in. If people like sandy beaches check out Melleiha on Malta and Ramla Bay on Gozo. My fav beaches are : Hondoq Il Rummien and Kalanka, plus Peter’s pool . A boat trip of Blue Lagoon - heaven

We went and it was great as a pool and beach holiday but in the summer was really too hot for anything other than pool and beach.

I am currently typing from our hotel in Malta whilst we wait for our bus back to the airport.

mdina, Valletta and Hagar Qim are all great day trips and beautiful buildings and scenery but where we are in St Paul’s Bay feels like we are staying in a post war bombed city. There are dozens of cranes building new hotels… tons of empty buildings and just quite run down. However we got a massive bargain for 3 of us all inclusive £1500 for a week. It has been great as a base to take buses to other places but if you just want a nice resort to walk around then Malta is not the one. However, if you want to come and get some sun and go on at least 3 or 4 trips and visit Gozo then it’s great. I won’t be coming back but only because we have done it now.

My favourite mainland Spain area is Begur. Beautiful little town, visits to Barca, Sitges, Girona etc all easy.

Gorgeous cove beaches

Roman ruins and hill top towns.
