Can anyome advise?

I'm Looking at booking 10 days in August flying in and out of bilbao.

I want to see the guggenheim, maybe go to the beach, wander around picturesque towns and eat nice food / drink nice wine. Got teen/pre-teen dc with me so there will be 4 of us.

Pool fun and sunbathing hoped for but i know it could rain.

Thinking of booking 5 nights at a coastal apartment near to Bilbao.

I'm also looking at 5 nights in vitoria gastiez for a change of scenery. It looks lovely as a city. The main reason is to get a place with private pool and garden but it seems central to the region and I could hit a few vineyards and a day trip to San Sebastian donastia. I'd have loved to stay there but it's ££££.

Alternatively i could move to another picturesque beach town about 90 mins up the coast from bilbao in the direction of santander. Nice view from balcony but much too far to get to san Sebastian. Town seems a bit little and quiet.

I don't really want to drive long distances.

I'd happily stay in one place if there's somewhere people can recommend as a good base.

San Sebastián is great. The sea has waves big enough for some excitement for teens, but still very safe. It’s a great city.

Vitoria/ Gasteiz is lovely, but it's not five days worth of lovely iyswim. But it sounds ideal to stay in if you've found a nice place, Donastia is definitely worth a trip so do go somewhere close enough to visit there rather than further away.

That's helpful @CrocusSnowdrop . I could stay coastal near bilbao for 6 days but I figured we'd split the time then there's more day trips we can do from vitoria gastiez.

@Mumof3cherubs I've found a lovely place for 4 days in donastia but it's double the cost of anywhere else and DH was using cost as a reason not to go.

If you stay in Bilbao a day trip to San Sebastian is easy by bus. There are direct buses every hour from very early until about 11pm.

Burgos is also worth a visit from Vitoria/ Gasteiz, it's a medieval city that also has some good museums. I'm jealous, I love northern Spain!

Also agree with PPs that public transport is the way to go, good train connections around this region
