Where is chic in Greece?

We’ve been to the Amalfi Coast and to Taormina and Cefalu. We did Mykonos a few years ago which is slightly passé these days.

Where else is chic in Greece? No Santorini, please.

Elefsina.

I realise my original post may suggest that I think the first places are in Greece. Of course I know they are in Italy.

Condé Nast Traveller ranks the attached. Might need two posts. They only recommend “chic”.

Elefsina. 😆

Seriously OP, depends what you're after. I would say somewhere like Chios or Ikaria if you want somewhere expensive but low-key with good villas and nice restaurants. No idea where the current equivalent of Mykonos would be.

Why are you going ? Is it for a beach holiday or an active holiday ? Because I just adore Athens and there are some beautiful hotels in Glyfada and Vouliagmeni, the Athenian Riviera. You can spend the most gorgeous, glamorous day at this fabulous lake with warm thermal water and waiter surf or to your lounger, it was one of the highlights of a holiday full of fantastic experiences

or of course the ultimate Greek island Hydra, no motorised vehicles and total peace.

Kefalonia is stunning

StiffyByngsDogBartholomew · 03/01/2024 17:02

Also to be brutal, why do you care if it's chic or passé ? Surely the only point of a holiday is to enjoy yourself ! All you get in a "trendy and chic" destination is poor value for money, well in my opinion anyway.

TizerorFizz · 04/01/2024 00:23

@StiffyByngsDogBartholomew I actually would care. Why go for pine furniture and crap pool furniture when you don’t have to?

Delphigirl · 04/01/2024 00:29

For foreigners, Hydra, spetses and Paros are considered chic. The French love Paros and admittedly it has nice villas and the food is excellent and antiparos is fun.

for Greeks, we go to our home islands and don’t tell foreigners what is really chic because they will ruin it 🤣

Delphigirl · 04/01/2024 00:34

@TizerorFizz that conde Nast list is bizarre. Nobody in the history of the world has ever accused kos or igoumenitsa of being chic. Looks more like a list of hotels which advertise in conde Nast.

TizerorFizz · 04/01/2024 00:37

I don’t think they do. They might have had journalists go there though. That’s a reasonable starting point. Sani was on the list and everyone knows about that. The hotel in Kos is surely about the hotel. Not the island? I went to Kos in the 70s when it didn’t have a hotel.

The op specifically said that Mykonos was passé, the way I read the post was that she wanted to go ti somewhere that is a fashionable destination. Ie where bloggers, YouTubers, journalists etc have decided is cool. She didn't say she wanted a really nice, cool hotel.

in my opinion the fact that a destination is trendy does not mean you are going to get a better hotel. It just gets filled up with tiresome aware-of-themselves types posing for their instagram pages to show how cool they are and cloggers trying to blag freebies. No thanks !

Hydra is nice - lovely harbour

Usernamen · 04/01/2024 15:15

Nothing would put me off a place more than if influencers and bloggers have deemed it ‘chic’. That surely means it actually is passé now?!

TizerorFizz · 04/01/2024 16:20

Surely a holiday destination is what you want? Not what you don’t want! Don’t go to a resort or Island if it’s not for you. I’ve never seen anywhere full of certain types of people. Most areas and hotels are a blend. We all like different things and if someone wants to check out what’s trendy, I wouldn’t ask MN! I would use other means!

ianshe · 04/01/2024 17:18

I've been to costa navarino, twice back in 2014. The first time was as a couple and we liked it so much we decided to come back with the kids and We stayed in a villa that time and it was WONDERFUL. Quiet, "chic", no grappling for sunbeds, our own butler, snorkelling in the most beautiful blue waters ever 🤩
Large selection of restaurants, I remember the Japanese one was so good!
Argh I want to go again!
The only pain was we couldn't fly into kalamata which was the nearest airport so had fly into Athens and the drive down was around 3hrs if my memory serves me well. Worth it though.
