Going on a solo holiday today

I’m about to head out for my first solo holiday. I’m only going to Portugal for 4 nights but I am so nervous!

I’ve only ever been away with family or friends before. A few months ago I booked this holiday as I was desperate to get away. DH couldn’t come due to work and friends were either busy or couldn’t afford it.

I’m mostly worried about being seen as a billy no mates to be honest. Would love some words of encouragement from anyone who has travelled or holidayed solo before 😃

Everyone was very nice but I feel like I got some odd looks when asked how many was in my group!

I say 'Just me!' with a big beaming smile. Sounds like you had a fabulous time.

Say " there are three - me, myself, and I.

Did lots of solo travels. Used to notice some couples looked a bit envious when I told them I was travelling alone. I was viewed as very independent and intrepid, I loved it.
You can be whoever you want to be, eat where you like, spend what you like.

You'll have a great time. Take a book out for dinner :)

Last time I went away solo, I met and then had dinner with various interesting strangers. It was great fun!

Nobody else wanted to come to Lisbon with me so I just went on my own earlier this year. It was lovely not having to worry about what anyone else wanted.
I booked a cookery course, a boat trip, walked and ate - it was really relaxing.
I then went to a German city that I always wanted to visit on my own a few weeks ago.
Enjoy.

@brownbear201 just come across this post, do you mind me asking what part of Portugal you went to, did you feel safe travelling on your own, thanks

EBearhug · 21/05/2024 18:42

I've been to Lisbon and Coimbra alone and felt fine in both.

Hello! I went to Albufeira. Rather touristy but I definitely felt safe and I really enjoyed it. If I could rebook it, I would have done Lisbon for a few days.

After this, I went to Berlin for a week in February solo. Highly recommend that too, I had an amazing time. Being solo was so freeing.

Brilliant thanks so much am meant to be going to porches which is about 20 mins from albufeira, just trying to decide do I cancel the holiday or go on my own, this has made me feel a bit better if I go on my own, I love my own company been away before but only for 1 night and always in the UK,

I would definitely go! I was so close to cancelling my trip beforehand (hence why I started this thread!) but I am so glad I went. I'd only been away in the UK too prior to this trip but it was fine. I did quite a few booked activities as that's the sort of thing that I like and even they weren't as awkward as I'd anticipated. I didn't like to advertise to strangers that I was solo just in case so I just said that my husband was staying at the hotel because he didn't want to do that particular activity. But to be honest, I don't think that is even necessary somewhere like Portugal, it just made me feel better!

The whole trip was just incredible solo and I really gained a sense of confidence after I returned home from navigating it.
