Hi, looking at a city break at Easter with 10 year old son. Can't decide between Copenhagen or Amsterdam, which is best and why?x

Copenhagen is incredibly expensive. I used to take my boys to Amsterdam as there is so much for kids there.
Canal tours, the Nemo science museum, the Zoo and botanical gardens, the wonderful markets and pancakes!

Err, I don't think you can say one is best. They are both fantastic. Copenhagen is more expensive, but then you can get thr train across the bridge and visit Sweden too. Amsterdam would be good when your son learns about Anne Frank at school (can't remember when they study WW2, think it's about Y6 or Y7) .

Another vote for Amsterdam, so much to see & do.

Forgottenmyphone · 14/10/2023 17:57

Amsterdam has more for dc that age. The food is much cheaper too.

Amsterdam. I was underwhelmed with Copenhagen.

I’d say Copenhagen!
I wasn’t a fan of Amsterdam with kids, it was full of wasted young people and people trying to sell me drugs.
I spent a week in Copenhagen with kids and found loads to do. It was much friendlier and chilled. Tivoli, the zoo, the aquarium, the Cisterns, circus museum, sea swimming pools and loads of great play parks.

The Tivoli gardens in Copenhagen are well worth a visit (or so I'm told - they were shut when I went there!)

The National Museum of Denmark is one the best museums I've ever been to. They have loads of exhibits of items - and bodies - dug out of the peat. I found those absolutely amazing (you can see the people's hair, and the weave and colour of their clothes!), and I think it would almost certainly appeal to a 10 year old boy!

But Copenhagen is v pricey - though I'm guessing that if it's just you and a child, you won't be too bothered about drinking alcohol, so that will keep costs down.

Copenhagen definitely. I didn't like Amsterdam at all when I went.

Millybob · 14/10/2023 18:16

Copenhagen is pretty - but a bit dull. Though do recall going somewhere that was like a big open air museum, with lots of houses built as they were in different centuries/provinces - that might interest your son. Sorry, can't remember the name of it. Little Mermaid is mega-disappointing, you'd walk past without noticing.
Lots more to do in Amsterdam - canals, Anne Frank house, Van Gogh Museum, pancakes and apple cake. Just wandering.

We loved Amsterdam with kids and never saw wasted people

CoolShoeshine · 15/10/2023 20:09

Amsterdam definitely, much more fun and atmospheric. Copenhagen is lovely at the harbour but the rest is a bit dull.

Crikeyalmighty · 15/10/2023 20:18

HAving lived in Copenhagen I like both but those of you saying Copenhagen is dull I think maybe didn't get to see the best of it at all. It has a fantastic coastline and lovely white sand beaches and blue sea and the bridge , 2 lovely theme parks, Tivoli in centre but Bakken only 15 minutes on train set in lovely woodland- oldest theme park in the world- looks like Hansel and Gretel . it has the Viking boat museum at Roskilde (lovely town) just 25 minutes away, lots of water and beach stuff , the lovely fishing village of Dragor just 5 miles out near airport. It is expensive but mainly on eating out and drinking (and there are ways of keeping that down) it has several big outdoor food courts etc - I like Amsterdam but I wouldn't pick it personally over Copenhagen- and personally I don't actually think there is much there for children at al in Amsterdam. Copenhagen's has canals and sea, beaches and best ice cream and hotdogs I've ever had.

Padamae · 16/10/2023 19:08

My 11 year old daughter has been to both in the last few years. She loved Amsterdam but she says she would pick Copenhagen because she loved Tivoli so much.

AnnunciataZ · 16/10/2023 19:17

I would choose Amsterdam over Copenhagen and just to be controversial, would say that if you want a Scandi capital then Stockholm beats Copenhagen hands down!

BurbleBumleBleep · 16/10/2023 19:18

I’d say Copenhagen from a practical point of view.
He’s much more likely to have an opportunities to visit Amsterdam with school/ college/ friends because it’s close and cheap.
Copenhagen is one of those places you want to go to but don’t get around to.
