Birmingham airport practicalities

Hi all

Not flown in years and a have a few questions about the airport -

  1. Ziplock bag for hand luggage liquids ... can this be any old bag or should I get one as I gp through security, if they still do them?
  1. Planning to buy sun cream when through security. Is there always plenty?!
  1. Prescription meds in hand luggage (thyroxine, HRT patches and pill), must they be in their original labelled box?

Thanks 😊

They were handing out the clear bags when I flew from there a few weeks ago. Can't help on your other two questions, sorry.

  1. You need a 1L ziplock/ sealable freezer bag. If you don't have one they will send you to buy one from the machine at an over inflated price (though sometimes they'll be nice but it will slow you down a lot packing at that point)
  2. Yes, loads at the Boots airside or you can do click and collect if you want to be sure
  3. Where are you going? For some countries it is best to have them in their original boxes

If it's any help, I think you can order online to collect from boots after security

Ahh thanks all, that's helpful. I may do click and collect

Can I use a smaller bag from the box in my kitchen?!

I've taken plastic bags of all sorts through security there. Put them in one from home, and then you can always transfer to one of theirs if you need to.

There's a decent size Boots airside, suncream should be no problem.

We take prescription meds (Insulin, inhalers) not in their packaging - just put a few spare vials in a separate plastic bag for security (we only do that in case they count them as liquid). We used to always carry a spare (paper) prescription, but haven't done this for ages, as prescription details are now in the NHS app, so can easily show those if needed (but in 30 years of travelling with diabetic DH, probably 3x per year, have NEVER been asked for any of this).

The place is a mess at the work because of improvement works so add in a bit of time for wandering and getting lost.
I went a few weeks ago, the officer wouldn't accept my plastic bag because it was too big so had to decant stuff into another bag he gave me. Measurements are on the website.
I think official guidance is that all prescribed medicines come in the packet they were supplied in.

Ahh ok

Off to find bag measurements now.

Will look at ordering sun cream ahead.

Will keep meds in box just in case as it's no problem and I've the app on my phone too - may even screenshot just in case crap mobile data let's me down.

Will factor in extra 30 minutes for airport faffing/squabbling about where to go with DH. So will get there minimum 2.5 hours before flight

Thanks you lot, you are fab Grin

I use the 1litre ziplock ones from Sainsbury's.

Pre order anything essential but you ca. just buy on arrival if there is a supermarket near your accommodation

tellmewhentheLangshiplandscoz · 27/06/2023 16:33

So the bags again ... website specifies 20x20cm but mine is 8x8 - do we think that'll be ok?
