How many days in Italy?

Me and my partner are planning a trip for just the two of us for Italy this year. We want to go to Sorrento and visit the Amalfi coast, Positano, Pompeii and Capri. We will be staying for 7 or 8 nights but could push to 9 if that's not enough time. The day before we travel back though we are going to Naples because my DP has family there so we will spend the last day with them in their village.

How many days do each of these places need? And if this is not enough time, what should we cut out? We can't stay for more time due to limited annual leave. I'm not sure if it's best to stay in Sorrento and just do day trips to these other places or whether they each need a few days.

Thanks!

All of those places are near enough to do as day trips from one central place. I'd stay on the Amalfi coast rather than Sorrento tbh.

How long is a piece of string? Italy is one of those places to return to multiple times, and there is still never enough time. Just go for as long as convenient/affordable, and then start saving up for the next trip!

If you are spending a day in a village near Naples then you need to allow some time for Naples itself. The archaeological museum alone is worth a day.

Last time we were there we spent a week in Naples and still didn't see everything. Can't wait to go back.

We stayed for 4 nights I think.

Flew into Naples. 1 night there (hated the city tbh). Train to Sorrento where we stayed for the other 3 nights. Went to Capri for one day. And Pompeii/Mount Vesuvius another day. Oh and one day to the island of Murano where the glass is made.

Go for as long as you can and see as many different places as you can fit in. Hiring a car would help you get around easier. The Amalfi coast is beautiful (just not Naples itself imho).

You need a day for Pompeii.
Do you want to go up Vesuvius and visit Herculaneum? If so, you could do those together, but it would be another day.
You need a day in Naples for your family commitments.
I didn't like Sorrento very much, but say one day for that.
We stayed in Amalfi, which is lovely, but small. There's a nice cathedral and cloister and restaurants, etc. You could also visit Ravello, which is up the hill behind Amalfi. All that could be done in one day.
Positano is also small, but if you're travelling there and back from somewhere else it will take several hours. It's nice and pretty, but apart from taking pictures and having lunch I'm not sure there's a lot to do.
So that, right there, is six days. If you want to visit Capri, that's 7 days. And then you've got travel - so about 8 days is fine.

Oh and one day to the island of Murano where the glass is made.

That's near Venice! I'm really confused.

You're very right. My mistake! Getting my Italian trips muddled up 🤦

As many as you can! Yes, those places are close together so you could do them easily from the same base, but it's a fab area so why not make the most of it? You could easily fill your 9 days. Or you could see lots of it in 4. But I'd go for the former every time.

1 day Pompeii
1 day Vesuvius/Herculaneum
1 day Capri (or 2 if you can sort an overnight there)
A couple of days heading down the coast
A couple of days chilling at wherever your base is
A day with your rellies in Naples

We had a week's package tour to that area many years ago. We stayed in Sorrento, & visited all the places you listed, apart from Naples. Loved it all, apart from Capri. So I'd say 9 days sounds right.

Scribbleonapage · 27/05/2023 18:29

Thanks for the responses! So it seems like 9 days is enough and I will be able to do most of them as day trips which is brill. There's so much of Italy I want to see and I have never been before so it was so hard to choose where to start with

I went without a car, and stayed in Sorrento. Positano to Sorrento is easy by both bus and boat.

(Driving between them is a bit scary, so I wouldn't recommend it)

We had 11 days with Sorrento as our base. It was easily filled and would like to return as there was so much more to see. Sorrento is quite busy but rewards exploration. There are some amazing churches, a beautiful lemon farm with ( cheap), homemade lemon gelato and the marina grande for fresh fish. There is a quite dramatic gorge in the centre too. Most day tourists are around the so called small marina. It’s interesting too but overrun with cruise ships. There are some good boat trips available though. We traveled to Capri twice. Once on the main ferry and once on a small boat arriving at The Marina Piccolla wasn’t much more expensive but was wonderful and a totally different experience to The Marina Grande.
Sorrento is a great base for accessing local travel. The trains and buses run from the same station. The train gets you to Pompeii and Naples for a few euros. We got a day bus ticket, again just a few euros, and travelled up the coast to Amalfi and then took a separate bus up the hills to Ravello which should not be missed.
Go for 9!

MidtoLon · 27/05/2023 19:33

Definitely if you are in Amalfi you need to allow time to go to Ravello

Join Sorrento (Italy) tourist group on Facebook, we went and hated Sorrento first time, now looking forward to going back in July.
