So, DD2 has decided she wants her and I to go to Athens for a few days so I'm trying to sort accommodation and flights today.
We're then flying to Madrid for a few days before taking the train down to Murcia to visit my mum for a few weeks.
My head is literally spinning trying to coordinate flights so I'm parking that for a few hours and focusing on where we'll stay.
Decided we'll do air bnb.
So to the questions.
How far out is the airport, which areas are best to stay for location and what sights are a must.
All come a bit out of the blue because until recently we've had to blackmail her to visit museums etc but it's what she wants to do!

I recently went with my 2 dc. We stayed here and hotel was perfect. Cheap and clean, friendly staff.

Sights that are a must are foremost the Acropolis, and actually we all loved the Agora. If shes into sport there's the panathenic stadium. If shes into drama there are ancient greek theatres.

They have a hop on hop off bus, which we used to get around. My dc aren't massively into museums and reluctantly let me drag them round the archaeological museum and acropolis museum.

The airport is a taxi ride away, i think it is a set price - just under €50. There is public transport but taxi was super easy with 2 dc.

My teen dd was most fascinated by all the graffiti around the city, some quite hard hitting political ideology sprayed on buildings.

My ds didn't care about any of the history or archeology, but he loved the burgers at the local souvlaki place and wants to return just to eat there again! He was also muchly impressed by Little Kook which is an insane fairtale desert place if thats something your dd is into.

If you have European passports then you get half price tickets at all the historical sites and dc get in for free. British passports have to pay.

We stayed here at the Attalos which had fabulous views of the Acropolis from the balcony and rooftop bar. Was just down the street from Monasteraki underground station so handy from airport and 2 mins from Monasteraki square which was great.
We did sightseeing - Acropolis etc, sunset from Lycabettus Hill, did hop on hop off bus down to the seas side and Lake Vouliagmeni then round Athens. Lots of wandering around, shopping, eating, drinking and soaking up the atmosphere too! Fabulous place!

Is it just me or does anyone else find this post confusing? Madrid is in Spain and Athens is in Greece?

Athens is fab. Google Mary Poppins cafe. We put dd in charge of navigation to nearest coffee shop and we ended up there 😆

You can get the tourist bus out of Athens to Lake Vouligameni (hope i have spelt that correctly) which is awesome.
