Weekends away aren't worth it or are they?

Been away for a weekend and realised they aren't worth it. Friday to Monday in a cottage. By the time I have unpacked it's time to go home again. Paid 350 for the cottage and spent around the same on eating out, fuel, attractions etc
That is 700 I could have put towards a holiday abroad. We normally have one or two a year weekends a year but decided not to bother.
Anyone else think it's just not worth all the hassle for a couple of days. Maybe if we didn't have kids. I just feel like I have blinked, missed it and back at work.

I like a weekend away with friends BUT I agree with what you've said in terms of weekend away with my husband. We've realised that often, if grandparents are having the kids at their house, it's just as good being in our own home for a weekend alone! No hassle, can have a nice meal or a takeaway and clean up the house before the weekend and it stays clean, ready for the week ahead!

I do get what you are saying, going for a cheaper weekend away would definitely make you feel less cheated, though.
