French Polynesia (Tahiti, Bora Bora)

Has anyone been to French Polynesia? We are thinking of going but slightly put off by costs. Looking 12k for 3* hotels for 2 adults 1 kid for 2 weeks.

My FIL said 'it's a lot of beach' he has been across the world and he was not that impressed. I think I would do it if I was on that side of the planet, but not as a special trip.
