Greek mainland

We have holidayed on lots of the Greek Islands and really love Greece. But we fancy trying the mainland for a change, but no idea about where to go. It would be me, Dh and 14 year old ds.
Type of holiday we like
quiet resort - no nightclubs or late night bars.
lovely beaches, we are beach people rather than pool people.
Nice tavernas.
preferably not too far from an airport.

I cannot make suggestions on specific resorts etc, but I highly recommend visiting the Peloponnese. You can fly into Kalamata and drive. It's an incredibly beautiful part of the world.

I can also recommend the Peloponnese. We stayed in Finikounda and Chrani when my kids were a similar age.

Peloponesse - Ermioni is lovely and you can get there direct on hydrofoil from Athens

MissyB1 · 28/01/2023 17:39

Oooh thanks sounds like Peloponese is the way to go. I will start browsing.

Try Halkidiki. There are beautiful beaches there. Villages, only few resorts, tavernas.
Depending on which part you choose, it can be 1-2 hours taxi drive from the airport, but it's worth it.

Sani Beach resort in Halkidiki is a lovely resort on the beach and has several different options where to stay, not cheap but really nice. It had a dine around option where you could eat in one of 16 places in the resort.

sivota might suit but it's quite an upmarket so pricey area

midsomermurderess · 28/01/2023 17:55

Another vote for the Peloponese. But Sivota, in Epirus (sort of opposite Corfu, north western Greece) is also a good shout, or Preveza are worth looking at too.

Lozza70 · 28/01/2023 17:59

Recommend Parga in Epirus. About an hour or less in the car from Preveza airport.

It’s great to hear someone else enjoyed Ermioni - we thought it was just the most charming and beautiful place, but no one else seems to have heard of it!

Watching with interest as looking for a similar holiday ourselves this Summer.

Well it’s proving quite tricky I have to say. Trying to find accommodation that has a separate sleeping space for a teen (obviously don’t want a “family room” where he’s in with us!)
And trying to be on or very close to a beach without paying ££££
Anyway will keep trying!

We went self catering using holiday lettings - many years ago. But it was nice as we had a two bedroom cottage, near the beach etc. The second bedroom wasn't great, it has to be said, but there was a large kitchen/dining/iving area and an outside area so a teen would have been fine there! Maybe rather than a resort that's the better option?

Hobbesmanc · 31/01/2023 14:23

Afytos in Halkidiki is a gorgeous little village overlooking great beaches. It really felt like a little island town

Great restaurants and bars etc. transfer was from Thessaloniki.

MsMarch · 31/01/2023 14:27

I am not sure as it was 15 years ago, but it might even have been this one or certainly one very similar in a very similar spot!

Chewbecca · 31/01/2023 14:34

We enjoyed both the Peleponnese - we drove from Athens - and the Pelion peninsular from Volos but I am not sure if there are regular Volos flights any more.
