Stockholm, Vienna or Brussels?

Which of the three would be better for a city break with 10 year old & 13 year old? We love Copenhagen so wondering how similar Stockholm is? No idea about the other two but there seem to be easy direct flights from Billund which is our first stop. We like slow days wandering rather than packing in loads of sightseeing.

Of the three we've only been to Stockholm but we went when DS was 12 in the summer. Had a fabulous time. Walked round the old town and saw changing of the guard, Skansen, Grona Land, Abba museum, took a ferry out to one of the 'holiday islands' for a day on the beach. I think we got the relaxed pace as we stayed just outside the centre and took the small ferry to get everywhere (cheap & children free).

Stockholm is glorious.

Susieblue18 · 26/01/2023 21:53

I’ve been to Stockholm and Vienna and preferred Stockholm.

Madcats · 26/01/2023 21:56

If you are spending a few days in Jutland (Legoland and/or Lalandia?) have you thought about heading up to Aarhus and/or down to Ribe and the island of Romo or across to Odense?

FuzzyBrain3000 · 26/01/2023 21:59

Stockholm is gorgeous, a wonderful city. Brussels, I really disliked for no rational reason. I just remember it being dull, grey and soulless. But I may have missed something!

AnnaMagnani · 26/01/2023 22:10

Of those 3, there is more for kids in Stockholm.

ParkElaine · 26/01/2023 22:18

We are also considering just staying in Denmark but can't land on where to go...considered Bornholm as read kits about it but watched a video and it put us off as it looked a little dull! Think we passed Odense on train to Copenhagen previously, is it worth a night or two? Would also consider West jutland coast, especially as we could then just do cheap return flights from Billund with Ryanair.

What sort of things do you want to do?

Bornholm is great but more of a beach/hiking/swimming/generally being outdoors place. There is more sightseeing in Odense (especially related to HC Andersen) and Fyn.

West Jutland is definitely all about the beaches, sand dunes and going to the lovely islands of Fanø and Rømø

Nothing is very far in Denmark and it is easy to get around by car and train. What about staying in Ribe?

Watch travelman channel 4 shows all these cities!

I haven’t been to Brussels but have been to Stockholm and Vienna. The Vasa is a must see in Stockholm as is the Viking Gold in the history museum. There’s lots to see and do but it’s expensive.

Vienna has Klimt at the Belvedere. The Spanish Riding School and the Schonbrunn Palace are beautiful. There are other great museums and plenty to see in a relatively small area. Both cities have enough to see. I didn’t prefer one over the other. They are different.

I’ve been to Vienna and Brussels. Brussels has a low-key charm. Vienna is beautiful. Both nice, safe, easy cities, but for me, Vienna is considerably lovelier.

honeyfox · 26/01/2023 23:32

I've been to all three (Vienna twice) but I would definitely recommend Stockholm, it's lovely.

Rewis · 26/01/2023 23:44

I found Brussels a bit boring. I love Stockholm. Never been to Vienna but other cities in Austria have been lovely. I'd pick Stockholm.

wednesdayjones · 27/01/2023 00:50

Stockholm ! I love Sweden.

Backtorealitynow · 27/01/2023 02:07

Been to all three some more than others, but out of those I too would say Stockholm, but it is quite expensive!

AnnaMagnani · 27/01/2023 02:26

We were planning a holiday in Stockholm when we worried about it being too expensive so I suggested a UK trip to Bath instead.

Stockholm was cheaper!

HowCanIPayItForward · 27/01/2023 03:52

Stockholm is beautiful and the Vasa is my favourite musem anywhere.

TizerorFizz · 27/01/2023 09:04

I haven’t found Stockholm cheaper than here for meals or general costs for tourists. Hotel prices might compare with Bath but little else. However it’s still worth it! For the Vasa if nothing else!

ParkElaine · 28/01/2023 14:44

Thanks everyone, have been researching Stockholm and all pretty excited about going there, looks fantastic! Looks like there's a great mix of outdoors activities and sights. Direct flights from Billund then direct flights back to Edinburgh from Stockholm so DH happy too.
