Barcelona - area/hotel recommendations please!

Looking at visiting Barcelona for a few days in February and am wondering where the best area to stay is? Any hotel recommendations would also be appreciated.

My favourite area is Eixample - a bit off the main drag but close to the Gaudi stuff, easy metro stations and lovely shops and bars. Avoid the Ramblas area! Overpriced and full of pick pockets

The area felt safe and was within walking distance of everywhere we needed. The apartments were lovely too.

I stayed at Olivia Balmes Hotel which I enjoyed. Good location.

Agree with Eixample. I was very nervous about visiting Barcelona due to pick pockets etc but absolutely loved it and loved this area. We stayed in more of an apartment than hotel called Uma Suites on Pau Claris and have just booked the same for next September.
