Is anyone going abroad over Christmas?

Just being nosey really! My DD16 and I are going away in 11 days time and can’t wait. We were meant to go away last Christmas but she got covid 4 days before we were due to fly! 😭

I don’t have any family really so prefer to go somewhere hot and get some winter sun!

@Remmy123 this holiday I booked in May, but normally I’d book late January/February to give me enough time to pay it off etc. Already thinking about where to go next year!

@Goodgrief82 As for the border strikes, there is one taking place on the day we we get back, but to be honest if my flight is cancelled whilst I’m away I won’t be too disheartened! 😊

@whatsinaname2 that’s so exciting, I did a month long trip to Thailand a few years ago just me and my DD! What’s causing you to be nervous?

@greenhousegal ahh see I get that, it’s one of the reasons I don’t go away in the summer, although I guess that is peak season too but it’s never appealed.

When I’ve been away there have been other children of course but not a huge influx or maybe I was too busy enjoying myself to pay any attention! Also depends what type of accommodation you go for. Adult hotels are a thing in certain places 😊. Have an amazing time in Rome though and yes things would have quietened down by then!

Is anyone else concerned regarding the weather now? We fly on the 20th from Manchester and London and I'm obsessively checking the weather!

We fly on the 19th from London and the forecast is 12 degrees. Tues 20th is 10 degrees. Manchester is only a couple of degrees cooler.

I think it should be fine!

Yep all being well it stays that way then. I feel dislike the winter, I used to love it but I really hate the cold now.

I read earlier that Aena (who control many Spanish airports) may be joining in with strike action on certain dates over Christmas too.

MissAmbrosia · 12/12/2022 19:53

I live abroad already. Won't be coming back to UK though. Just spent a lovely girly weekend in Lille. Planning a couple of days in Rotterdam over Xmas week. It's nicer than it sounds.

TomAllenWife · 12/12/2022 19:58

Yes Dubai on Boxing Day

melcalfe · 12/12/2022 20:36

We're in Bali now OP, don't worry about the rain - it rained a bit first week and has been glorious for the last two weeks - you wouldn't know it's rain season Smile

Ocean water is 30 degrees, incredibly warm atm. Have you been to Bali before? Bali belly is a real thing and even friends who've been living here for years still get it sometimes. Lots of hand sanitiser !

melcalfe · 12/12/2022 20:39

Those in summer destinations over Xmas - what to do on Xmas day? We have zero plans and currently it will be laying on the beach but I feel like I want to do something on Xmas day to make the day special.

Very little cooking facilities at villas. Booking a restaurant might be a pain as we've a baby who will get bored after 5 mins.

SnowfallSnowball · 12/12/2022 20:45

@melcalfe ahh thanks for that, that’s good to know! To be honest I’m not even fussed now I’m just glad to be getting away! As for Christmas Day, I’ve booked for us to go white water rafting and will have dinner on the beach probably 😊, may not be special but certainly different!

Oh and no I’ve not been to Bali before but yes I’ve heard about Bali belly, I’m bringing Imodium tablets just incase and will bring sanitiser! @melcalfe

Usually go away...Tunisia, Kenya, Barcelona, Colombia....fly mid dec and return early jan....have friends in these places so stay with them and travel around a bit...Spain can be bright n sunny but cold....did Canaries one year and weather was awful...minor hurricanes...flights cancelled etc...its not guaranteed to be hot and sunny there !..the cheap flights have long gone so now going away in mid january instead to spain and then tunisia...

exLtEveDallas · 12/12/2022 21:14

We aren’t going away this year and I really wish we were 😰. DD said she absolutely had to stay home so she could revise for mocks. I’m gutted.

if we were, it would have been to Egypt. Definitely Hurghada, probably Makadi Bay. We love it there, and the weather (20s) is just right for sunbathing and exploring.

instead we will be home, dd studying and DH and I moaning about turning the heating up.

We are!
Leaving Friday morning. Never been away at Christmas before, so very excited!

DC are still young so having to bring a few small Santa presents with us. I'm really looking forward to Christmas morning on the beach.

Only issue is I'm ill 🤢 Done a COVID test and it was negative, so fingers can I'll be better on a few days.

I'm a little worried about the strikes, but they only affect us on the return, so meh.

I’m in the exact same boat - sick AF, not Covid, going away in a few days (Monday). I wish I could rest up and focus on getting better, but as always, work is completely manic in the run up to taking a break and I have a tonne to do before I’m off. 😭

RhubarbFairy · 13/12/2022 18:13

There's certainly something going around. I'm also laid up ill. Started feeling a bit off on Wednesday last week and have got progressively worse. No idea if it's Covid as I'm out of tests, or a similar flu-like thing.
Hadn't even dawned on me that we go next week until I started writing this post.

Hoping to be fully recovered by then, and DS1 too as he's got the same. Not just for our holiday, but because it is utterly crap.

I am off work, but gutted as I work in a school so I'm missing all the fun and festivities.

Usernamen · 13/12/2022 18:55

Yup, it’s really lingering - 9 days and counting here. 🤒

Littletinytarzanswingingfromanosehair · 14/12/2022 10:39

I'm poorly too. Chest infection and a cold. All lat flows negative. Ready for it all now. Even the 11hr flight doesn't seem daunting. We have got premium economy this year, I hope it's worth it.
