Or am I just being overprotective?

No. It hadn't even occurred to me until I saw a little boy with a helmet on his scooter in the park last week

ds1 does. He can fall over from standing though. And he does wear the pads and stuff too BUT he does that himself (they came in a pack with his skates lol!)

whoops clicked the wrong one!

He is nearly 5. DS2 doesn't but he hasn't got a scooter

Yes.. especially after my dd's scooter got caught by a cyclist going through a red light, and she was thrown off it and landed head first on the pavement!

I won't let her on it now without one - but she is also my pfb

Yes - ds (4.6) rockets along on his and has all the coordination of a jelly. In addition, he fell off a bridge in a play ground on to his head when he was 3 and after an hour started shaking uncontrolably with slurred speech. The resulting hours in hospital convinced me that looking a bit daft is preferable to the alternatives.

My DS is 4.3 and wears his helmet on his bike. As for climbing trees, etc, well I must say I do feel sick when he climbs really high on the climbing frame and would not let him do that (or climb trees) at his age unsupervised. Anyway some helmets are really cool - DS has put superhero stickers all over his.

yes, dd had a very nasty accident - head first over the handlebars of a 3 wheeler scooter, she's worn one ever since. She started going really really fast about the age of 4 when she had her accident on the way to school hit a dip in the pavement!
