Multi-destination Mexico - worth it or too much hassle??

Either in spring or summer next year I’m trying to book a 14 night holiday to Mexico. We were thinking of one week in Cancún (or somewhere on the Quintana Roo coast) and the second week over in Puerto Vallarta on the west coast. Has anyone done this and thought it was worth it? Too expensive or justifiable, etc.?

If you’re doing multi destination I’d do it so that you can see the sites rather than just two beach resorts. One beach is much the same as another

We went to Mexico some years back for a couple of weeks. Started at Cancun, ended in Tulum, stayed at Merida and Campeche, took in Playa del Carmen, and stayed occasional nights near sights eg Chichén Itzá. We stayed in Yucatan but fit a lot in. We organised it ourselves and got around on public transport (I recall it had a good bus service).

I love Mexico. I can’t see the benefit of the split trip though as it would be a big disruption (effectively losing a day of holiday) and additional cost.

have you considered two hotels on the same coast if you just want some variety? Or stay on one coast and spend the flight money you save on some great day trips?

Only been to Playa del Carmen but there was plenty to do for ten days. We hired a car and drove about to quite a few of the sites and cenotes. Loads of stuff we didn’t have time for. I’d base yourself near there and stay in one place.

We went to playa del Carmen, Cozumel, Isla Mujeres, chichen itza, Merida and Cancun. It's easy driving and there is a lot to see and do

We did a few years ago.

We went to Mexico City and Chulua for a wedding. Then we flew to Cabo San Lucas for an all inclusive beach week.

It was quite easy to organise all the flights and hotels using Expedia. It wasn't too bad expense wise. It was Oct / November time so not high season at all.

Would suggest making one of the weeks in Mexico City, it’s fabulous with loads to do. Internal flights are simple, we used Vivo Aerobus.

I second this, I loved Mexico City. We did 11 nights, split between Merida, Chichen itza and Mexico City. We flew between Merida and Mexico City and took the bus between Merida and Chichen Itza. I'm not a very beachy person so didn't do any beach, but if you are you could combine beach a beach stay with Mexico City and perhaps a couple of other places as you have 14 nights.

Ditch the first bit. Tourist hell. Fly to Mexico City for a few nights, then on to Puerto Vallerta and then make your way up to to Sayulita. Bliss!
