Is there a special word for what I'm looking for?

I don't want to stay in a hotel.
We can't afford a villa with its own pool and mile-long drive up a dusty track.
An apartment isn't quite what we're after either as with two small children we'll be spending time there, rather than just using it to sleep.

Somewhere pleasant with a couple of bedrooms and a garden, a kitchen, a sitting room or balcony.

Maybe a semi-detached thing where you've got lots of families all sharing the same pool? A purpose built thing?

Or a nice little house in the town?

Am I explaining what I mean okay?

What do I google?

something like this?

LynetteScavo · 20/01/2008 20:56

cottage

I should think "self-catering" with a keyword of "shared" (as in shared pool, shared facilities) will find you what you want.

But I agree, there must be a trade name for them. Those conversions of farm buildings into several self-contained units of varying size, with own garden or not, games room & BBQ if you want them ... or there are a few hotels which have that sort of thing (chalets?) dotted about their grounds.

Italy.

Yes, chalet maybe. Or cottage.

Will try all suggestions.

The ones I find have often been called villas, but when I search villa I have to drool trawl through an awful lot of huge great budget blowing places.

That sort of idea Ernest, but smaller scale. Something like this or this (both yoinked from another thread this evening).

Hmmmmm... there isn't an obvious word, and I'm sure it's a fairly common thing to want in a holiday.

For Italy (specifically) I'd recommend you research "agri-turismo" - ie farmsteads which have decided to also be providers of holiday accommodation. I've heard of some fabulous options that way.

have you tried villarenters.com?

we've found all of ours on there. I've always found them called villas, and that covers the entire range. Mostly we've had 'villas' in gated complexes with shared pool, but I also found an apartment once on a similar basis, and the last 'villa' was actually a house with a private pool really cheap.

The search engine is a bit crap on it, but there are some real bargains on there.

also use search word Duplex, but I think in Eueope( ie taly) a large top floor apartment would be suitable.

Marble floors make lots of noise if you are underneath on a ground floor.

try the french/Italian/Spanish campsites. You can get a 2 or 3 bed mobile (or chalet in the Italian lakes) with your own pitch /small garden. You'll have a bathroom sitting area, dinig area, kitchen. Prob an outdoor BBQ, pool area - poss near beach or in countryside. Depending on size of site you can choose if you want one with loads of entertainment or a small site with no entertainment. You will also find frinds for your LOs which always helps!! We love these holidays!
