Where have you been that people have said 'oh wow, that's unusual', but you have really enjoyed? I would love some inspiration!

Lake Constance, lots of outdoorsy stuff to do - or do some cycling all the way round?
You can visit Austria, Switzerland and Germany in one go. The mountains are beautiful and very different in all 3 countries.

I used to work nearby!
Europe really is amazing, I do really need to adjust my thinking. This has been a good thread to remind me that closer to home is really great and greener

Second Lake Constance. We cycled all the way round, a different town/hotel each night. We all loved it as if felt like an adventure, and an achievement but was very manageable. I’d stay two nights in Konstanz as it is so beautiful.

Iran?! Ok that is definitely different! Was it the history? @Chisquared

some of these trips sound fab. I think that might be it, a different way of visiting places.

We have had some pretty great trips, and kids are very flexible. We are lucky to not be too bound by budget, but I did balk at a Silverseas quote for Galapagos. Out of interest, what time of year did you go @TizerorFizz?

Look at Vacations to Go for discounted prices on the Silversea antarctic trips - some of them offer significant discounts.

Antarctica - always gets the best reactions when I mention it.

Myanmar - the place nobody seems to have heard of!

Chisquared · 03/08/2022 20:38

@Weirdlynormal it was a long time ago, 23 years and pre kids. I have an Iranian friend who helped us get visas and book hotels. I have heard it is much easier now, travel companies can arrange tours and itineraries. We went to Tehran, Shiraz and Isfahan.

Jordan is wonderful, compact with so much to see and do - Petra and Wadi Rum are breath taking. If you want unusual things to do that are 'wow' then I'd recommend the Caminito del Rey, southern Spain in Europe. Or further afield then swimming with whale sharks and bioluminescence, Holbox island, Mexico.

We are off to Antarctica in November. It’s 19 days and bloody expensive. I would definitely not take teens though. We are on an expedition ship. Silversea is twice the size. They also seem to depart from Chile. I think for somewhere like the Galapagos with teens an intimate boat is way better especially if other families are with you.

Azerbaijan

I’d love to go to Antarctica, but you’re right, not with kids! I think the Galapagos needs further investigation. We have booked up next year already, but I should look beyond.

We have been to Jordan, that was brilliant. Lots of history, brilliant food, breathtaking scenery. That’s why Iran is attractive.

I want to see more of Africa too.

I have this weird feeling that time is running out (a few friends have died) and I need to see the world. I’d love to bin the job and travel but a few barriers to that option.

We were going to Iran. Just DH and me. Then BA stopped flying there and GB govt gets twitchy. Issues with people held captive there! So I would not go at the moment. It’s a huge shame. I think we might have sanctions against them.
