European holiday without car

Tillsforthrills · 09/07/2022 16:28

Can anyone recommend a good place to go in any European country (except Spain as we already have two bookings for that).

With the following:
Easy to do without a car, a town and good restaurants very nearby and easy available direct flights

Anyone?

North Spain.

We never hire a car on holiday and manage to see and do lots of things. Last holiday abroad was Kos.

Germany.... places like Munich & then Tegernsee.
Direct flights and good trains. Additional bonus, when booking accommodation around Tegernsee, you'll get a free pass for public transport. (Just check before booking)

Europe is full of fascinating cities close to airports where no car is required. Can you narrow down what you're looking for at all?

Beanomatica · 09/07/2022 16:38

But based on your OP, northern Italy would be a good start - Bologna/Verona/Venice area - fab food, lots of good train links, easy travel to cities, towns, villages, mountains, coast, etc. Food amazing, culture and history and shopping also.

This. Just about anywhere with an airport also has public transport.

The list is endless - Paris, Rome, Milan, Catania, Porto, Venice, Berlin, many Greek islands, Dubrovnik.

daisypond · 09/07/2022 16:42

Surely most places… Any European city. Sorrento is a good base for the Amalfi coast -fly to Naples and an easy short train trip.

LeafHunter · 09/07/2022 16:49

Bratislava.

Do you want a beach holiday?
Direct flights from where?

midsomermurderess · 09/07/2022 16:54

Denmark. Specifically Fyn. The small city of Odense is there and you could fly to Aarhus which isn’t that far away. It’s good for cycling, there’s castles, beaches. Really cute. And you could do a bit of island hopping around the archipelago. No car required.

Goneback2school · 09/07/2022 16:56

We are just back from Duinrell in the Netherlands. Close to lovely small town- Wassanar with lots of choice for food. Also great public transport links and within cycling distance to bigger towns/ cities like Leiden, The Hague or Amsterdam.

Wow thank you all for your suggestions and apologies for being so ambiguous.

Beach would be good but not necessary, a swimming pool is a must if there’s any good B&B’s or hotels that could be recommended.

I’m going to look into each of these fab options 💐

Pretty much any city would fit that criteria.
Nice is a good one. Dubrovnik.

ContadoraExplorer · 09/07/2022 17:08

Someone mentioned Dubrovnik and I second that - lots to see and do/great food (lots of Italian influence)/beach (although pebble/rock rather than sand) and not far from airport with a regular bus.

BertieBotts · 09/07/2022 17:29

If it's for this year Germany currently has a 9-euro ticket offer which is €9 for unlimited use of all public transport classed as "local" (so basically anything except for intercity express trains) for the months of July and August. You can buy them at the train stations.

sixtiesbaby88 · 09/07/2022 17:48

Sorrento, seaside town with some nice restaurants, easy to get a train to Pompeii, Herculaneum, Naples. Get a boat to capri for the day

Tillsforthrills · 09/07/2022 18:45

These are amazing suggestions!

Thank you, I was really stuck for ideas and I think that’s due to having so much choice too so nice to hear where is good from your personal experiences.

Croatia - stay in Cavtat and get the taxi boat to Dubrovnik or the islands. There’s nice restaurants along the seafront. A couple of good hotels in the town with pools. The beach isn’t sandy but you can swim in the sea too.

I’ll add to the list!

I know you said other than Spain, but we did Seville, Jerez and Cadiz a few years back without a car. I wasn't hugely impressed by Cadiz but loved the other two.

Tavira in Portugal. Close to Faro airport, lovely coastal town with a railway station, old town/new town and fantastic beach that you travel to on a water taxi.
