hi everyone - i am new here !

i would love to take my son to a safe beach on the amalfi coast. i love italy, i have been there 3 times before, but never to the amalfi coast.

i have read fab things about maiori in terms of being safe to swim, not too high up the cliffs, etc. good for public transport. any other beaches worth considering ?

could any one please recommend a self-catering place they have stayed at (with contact details please if you have them) ?

there is just 3 of us, (my son is 3.5 yrs) so wish to keep it cheap by getting self-catering and one bedroom is enough.

i have seen pics of one very clean looking one bed flat with a big terrace with nice views and they are offering it to me for about £560 for 14 days, near the beach. does that sound reasonable as i know maiori is very pricey ? it seems pretty cheap to me as most others are a lot more.

is it very noisy near the beach ?

we are planning to go the first two weeks of april, what is the weather like then ? will we be able to swim ?

i don't like going to italy in the summer. it is too hot for me. we went to venice in august about 5 years ago. big mistake, it was just far too hot !

thanks for any thoughts.

I went to Positano for my honeymoon, was beautiful. Again nothing specific to recommen but you'll have an amazing time. Not very beach-y though I seem to recall...

Thanks flowery, we went to Barcelona for our honeymoon : )

I need a beach really for my son as he will get bored doing what I like doing (looking at beautiful buildings !) I have heard Positano is gorgeous, but from what I have read it is very upmarket, so sounds too expensive for my budget.

Any one been to Maiori ?

sorry haven't been to Maiori but did do Amalfi coast 5 yrs ago. Got budget flights to Naples, bus to port and then boat over to Ischia for 3 nights, Then hydrofoil to Sorrento for 3 nights and then train to Napels for last 3 nights. Public transport is cheap but usually jam packed full. Do go and do Pompeii - its brill and the train station is across the road from the main entrance too.

hi sunny, yes will defo. not bother hiring a car as i have heard it is too expensive and difficult to park. when did you go ? was it high season ? just wondering if it will that busy in march/april ?

we did it in August- yes rather busy but a great fun holiday, although the bus from Naples to Amalfi on a sunday was packed to bursting point. I would think March/April would be much less busy -good luck!!

thanks sunny - i am so looking forward to going to italy again - it is my favourite place on earth : )

I've stayed in Sorrento in March, it was nice weather - about 20 degrees C. The buses running along the coast shouldn't be too packed in April. Would also recommend a trip to Pompeii - there will be plenty of open space there for your DS to run off some energy!

closethippie · 14/01/2008 16:54

Thanks chaos. Pompeii is defo. on the list !Yes, at 3.5 yrs he has loads of energy and needs to burn it off on a daily basis : ) It is his first trip ever to Italy, I doubt he will remember much of this trip in later life, but at least we will have loads of photos.
