How much do you spend on holidays in a year?

DP is panicking about our holidays budget.
I shot myself in the foot in 2006 and 2007 by searching out super-cheap villa holidays in Italy and the south of France for £1,200 and £1,500 respectively. Now he expects all holidays to be that cheap.
I've managed to get us holidays at Disneyland Paris in April (5 days) and Crete in August (2 weeks) for just over £3,500 in total.
Do you think this is such a huge sum? I think DP is being ridiculous (and he can afford it).

For out main summer holiday - less than a thousand. And that's a struggle. But I suppose we spend more than some of days out during the year.

I suspect Xenia holiday budget would do us for about 10 years

No erm, from memory about 20 years. I am trying to get her to adopt me/us but failing miserably.

Our holiday spend is usually around a month's net salary is that helps as a guide line, sometimes a bit over. Disneyland Paris is hugely expensive for what it is imo. If you're doing the Mouse then Orlando is far better value, and if you're into vila holidays then it is easy to get a good 2/3 week holiday to make the flights worthwhile.

That was our first choice Ladymuck but the flights were ridiculously expensive. DSs are only 5 and 3 so we'll save Florida for when they're a bit older.

No spending money included in the budget.
I don't want to say what DP's salary is in case it causes a huge bun fight (that's happened a few times on MN lately).

Yes, of course it is a huge sum. But if your income is large as well then good for you!

We holidayed on £300 for a few years, and have now reached the giddy heights of £1,100. This is less then 1 month's net income though as suggested by Lady Muck as a benchmark.

Crete is villa with private pool. Fights were pretty expensive.

£3,500 is obviously going to be a lot more than the average family have to spend on a holiday, but it sounds like your income is a lot higher than average.

Perhaps the answer is to let dp book it this year, see what he chooses?

I do like the idea of measuring it by net income. On that basis I reckon we spend around a month's worth on our annual holidays.

I like the month's income thing too. I'll tell DP most people spend a month's salary. That'll shut him up.

Would he be happy with Norfolk under canvas though? Is it only you who likes to spend on hols?

He'd say he was happy with a tent in Norfolk but he's the one who goes on about 'needing some sun'. And he was the one saying we had to have a private pool. not shared, then panics when I tell him how much it costs.

Well maybe agree how many holidays and what criteria apply - after a couple of glasses of wine - then find what you want online and challenge him to find the same thing cheaper if he wants to?

There is no way I could afford 1/12 of our net income on holidays so I don't think this is much of a rule of thumb!

think probably over the whole year going away maybe 3 or 4 times to not very glam places we prob will spend about £1000. But thats with my really persuading dh into it! Think you are very lucky lyra, would love your hols and budget! enjoy
