How does this sound for a summer holiday

Starting to plan ahead for the summer. The joy of being mid 50s means it’s our first summer holiday abroad without any kids for years and years πŸŽ‰πŸŽ‰πŸŽ‰.
Thinking of booking the car onto the ferry with a tent in the boot and heading to Bilboa to tour around northern Spain. We would be going in August for approximately 2 and a half weeks. We enjoy cities but also walking and swimming. Looks like we might get to see a couple of cities and also some walking in the hills. Anyone any experience/advice?

As you don't have children, personally I would avoid August, just before or just after summer holidays will be cheaper and quieter, but other than that it sounds great.

Unfortunately I did plan far enough ahead! We have always taken the first 3 weeks in August because of school holidays and didn’t think to change it this year so holiday cover for work is now organised. I’ll be smarter next year.

I didn't find northern Spain too hot in summer. I flew to San Sebastian and took the train along to Llanes on the coast and hired a car. I went up into the Picos mountains, stunning, gorges to walk through, flowery meadows. On to Oviedo which is aan elegant city, Gijon nearby on the coast, up to Leon, stunning drive. Then into Galicia, which rurally is a bit like the west of Ireland, visited a Coruna which I liked, ending up in Santiago. It's a great part of the world, so different to the rest of Spain, with its 'celtic' culture. Very hearty food, lots of cider, a very particular venacular architecture.

I flew in to Santander.

@midsomermurderess. I love the sound of all of that. Time to get out h th r map. Looks like it’s usually low to mid 20s in August so not too hot. As I say our time is fixed

My DH and I have grown up DC, this will be the first year of not taking them on holiday with us. We still like to go away in August.
Your trip sounds fab.

Ok. General consensus is that the outline of the holiday sounds good. I’m going to go ahead and book the ferry and we can work out the details in the next few weeks. I reckon I may well just do exactly what @midsomermurderess outlined πŸ˜‚

Wherever you go there, you be disappointed. I hope you a great time.

@midsomermurderess Should that say will be or won't be? WinkGrin

It’s a fabulous holiday - we did that for our honeymoon years ago and it was awesome. Have you thought about booking the Brittany ferries car tour - you get the ferry and all your hotel bookings, and then you just relax and tour round. We have done that and it was reasonably priced and lovely hotels. Do make sure you go up the cable car at Fuente De, well worth doing.

Bilbao is a lovely city. I would never go in August though, September was still warm when I went.
