Undecided on taking our caravan abroad

Two years ago we sold our caravan and bought a 2007 motorhome. The only thing I didn't like about it was the noise from the engine and its lack of ummf. We thought a Mo HO would fit the bill better than tugging a tin tent around Europe, We planned on visiting Austria in particular because that was supposed to be where our son and granddaughter were competing in the Iron Man event. Anyway seeing as all that fell through and the motorhome was sat on the drive for months doing nothing we decided to forget Europe and sell the Mo Ho. We are now back with a nice little touring van which does suit out style of camping better in the UK. But will it be ideal for touring abroad? Years ago I did take a huge motorhome from Calais across northern France down the west coast through the Ardeche to the Pyrenees. I'm not sure I'd like to do the same thing towing a van so I'd like your advice as to whether we should take the ferry to Bilao and travel west along the coast to Satiago de Compostela or from San Sebastian through the Pyrenees. If anyone has done either trip I would love to hear how it went
