Hi,

I'm going to New York at the end of august, can anyone tell me what the weather is like? Also, does anyone have any tips or helpful advice?

I've been in winter, for my honeymoon and we bought those passes which saved us a fortune!!

Thanks x

It could be very hot and humid.

You might get a hurricane.

It'll be hot (almost certainly) but I love NY in the summer - it's much quieter, especially at the weekends and hotels are good value. One top heatwave tip a friend gave me is to head to museums such as the Met or the Whitney in the middle of the day since they have to have temperatures that stay the same winter and summer. The Met usually has a summer rooftop installation too. You can take the subway all the to Coney Island which is great. One heatwave, I loved that my room had a Smeg fridge with a icebox which meant that I could freeze bottles of water.

Hot and humid. New Yorkers might still be away for holidays. Back for Labor Day.

Very hot, but everywhere is air conditioned. Except the subway.

It’s hard to say- I can remember cool-ish weeks and then heat waves too in August
Plan an activity inside between 1 and 4 pm.
Try to avoid the subway since it’s extremely hot on subway platforms. You might have to use it if necessary, but if you happen to see an empty subway car (carriage) watch out - it probably means that there’s no air conditioning in that particular one.
At night, take advantage of the weather to walk around and see some of the summer festivals. Also, don’t miss Shakespeare in the Park. August is also Harlem Week - which lasts the whole month!

disgusting humidy....you will drip sweat....i used to go each year for work in august for a few weeks....it wipes you out....struggle to do much....!!...and the air con is far too fierce in many places so in and out of shops you end up feeling weird !!

Indoors are heavily air conditioned but it's very humid and sticky outdoors. It's doable

Hot and humid

Hot,humid, storms. The instant you go outside you will be dripping. I hated it. Wish I had known in advance …long before the internet.

I live in NYC, it's hot and humid, but it's also one of my favorite times of year in the city. People tend to leave town, so it's pretty quiet in a nice way and you can get reservations at restaurants which are normally really hard to get into. It's also Restaurant Week which I absolutely live.

My pro-tips would be - bring sunscreen, plan your days carefully so you're not tramping about in the middle of the day - try and be in a museum/restaurant/indoors between 12pm and 2pm, AVOID MIDTOWN, it's so trafficky that it's hotter than Hades, take some time to enjoy our waterside parks! My favorites are Gantry Park and Hudson River park - that's where the locals hang out in the summer - picnics are popular.
