recomendations on indoor play areas in sheffield

Hopeeveryone had a merry christmas and good new year. I was wondereing if anyone out there had used the following indoor play areas in sheffield recently

  1. Jungle mania - the newish one over Darnall way, near B&Q

  2. Space fun Zone on Middlewood road in HIllsborough.

My kids and I are currently avid fans of the pirate ship in Hillsborough (for about 3yrs) but thought we may try another one
,have tried megacentre and kids not overly impressed. Just wondered if anyone had used both mentioned and could give me a comparison of them both I am thinking of going tomorrow so any opinions greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance

don't know jungle mania - sorry. Space fun zone is smaller than Pirate ship, although has been redone since I was last there.

Hello by the way - ate you new to MN - haven't seen you on any other Sheff threads - do you fancy the Spa meet on 23rd Feb - or any other meets? a few of us do lunch/coffee occasionally

Hulababy · 03/01/2008 16:13

Hi

I am in Sheffield too, over at Lodge Moor. I haven't used either of the two you mention there, sorry. DD likes Pirate Ship, which we went to today infact. Have also been to TotstoTens near the Greyhound track but I am not so keen - less place to sit and a bit more run down I think.

There is a lovely new soft play in Ranmoor - Playspace. Great food, wifi for adults use, nice new play area - but it is dearer than most at nearly £5 after school/holiday. £3.50 in term time IIRR. Not as big as others, but DD likes it.

Have also been to Alphabet Zoo in the past, but again I think that is a bit more run down than Pirate Ship.

Piccalilli2 · 03/01/2008 16:16

Sorry, quick hijack, whereabouts is the pirate ship? My sis is in Hillsborough so could be perfect for us.

Would second Playspace, my dd (2.3) loves it, but haven't tried the others, sorry.

Hulababy · 03/01/2008 17:03

Oirate Ship is just off the A61 towards Barnsley direction. From Hillsborough get onto A61 and head out of town. Go over the roundabout just past football ground staying on A61. You then go past a Fitness First (on the right) and you come to traffic lights with an old railway bridge going over the road. Turn left just after the bridge - you see The Mill housing development. Turn left after this and you come to a small indstrial estate - Pirate Ship is the first building.

Here

pyjamagirl · 03/01/2008 17:06

Pirate ship is good we live within walking distance and it's great for rainy days

staff are really friendly and they have a loyalty scheme I think so many paid visits you get a free play.

Hot chocolate is gorgeous too x

summermum · 03/01/2008 17:20

Not tried Jungle Mania, but can vouch for Tots to Tens, Pirate Ship and Space Fun Zone being ok. My ds prefers Pirate ship but things are more expensive here than at the others. They even charge full price for walking babies under 2 (even though they can't access equipment other than the toddler pool!) Space Fun Zone and Tots to Tens are owned by the same person now, so have a loyalty scheme where you pay 10 times then get a free entry. We used to go all the time to Tots before it changed over but now ds starts school on Monday so the only time we'll get is when dd wants to go (only 16 months at moment!)

Just a gentle New Year reminder to please, please post all these recommendations on the Sheffield Local site - this is just the sort of info we need and would/should have been the perfect place for the OP to find the answer to her query.

Sheffield Local Talk can be found here and you can find the site by putting Sheffield in the search box here

Hijack over...Enjoy spa meet

Hulababy · 03/01/2008 17:46

Will make sure they are all on there

PandaG · 03/01/2008 17:46

Hulababy · 03/01/2008 17:47

summermum - the next Spa meet is hopefully end of February - more details in meet up section of Talk

PandaG · 03/01/2008 17:50

and Carrie, do you fancy joining us? think there is room!

Sorry, should have thought about MN local

summermum · 03/01/2008 21:14

did have a look on the local bit of mumsnet but there was nothing really to compare the two to each other. ANyway looks like junglemania is the winner, just a shame i dont drive so a good hearty 15 min walk from tram stop should justify a bit of chocolate cake when i get there. Unless anyone knows buses that go that way, going to look on bus web site now tho'

Hula, does that one in Ranmoor cater for toddlers? I looked on their website, but it wasn't very helpful. Then I tried to phone and got an answer message saying, "if you want to know anything, please call in"......which sort of negates the idea of phoning them up.

Based on that, am not very impressed so far.Is it any good?

summermum · 03/01/2008 21:40

heard mixed reports about ranmoor one, some say excellent others say a little small and a bit expensive, may depend on your child and what you like yourself, i enjoy pirate ship as there is loads of room even when busy, plenty tables and cafe is well priced with good selection, staff v friendly and get to know regular customers.

Hulababy · 03/01/2008 22:28

It is smaller than Pirate Ship, but built more upwards. Better for older children. Not sure how much for little ones. 5yo DD and her friends like it.

£3.50 in term time/school hours
£5ish rest of time

I like it as it is quieter and the food is very nice. I think the food is very reaonable esp for the quality. Kid's choice also good. Also it just seems so much cleaner than most soft play, and the staff are always walking round, tidying, keeping an eye on things, etc - probably why not at phone all time TBH. Just seems that one step up a bit from the others I guess - lol, S10 snobbery coming out I fear

Parking more difficult but if you go up to top of road there is loads of on road parking there.

Hulababy · 03/01/2008 22:31

I agree that priate sship is much more open and more space, but IME it is so busy and there are no staff keeping an eye on play - had to speak to some older children ourselves today as they were going round the younger ones being nasty to them. And the food is much more "something" and chips type - mine you the chip butty was tasty I go there simply as it is half way between mine and my friend's house. But Ipersonally prefer the new one in Ranmoor as more pleasant an experience for me. Def not as rowdy!

Piccalilli2 · 06/01/2008 13:19

My dd is 2.3 and loves Playspace in Ranmoor although she has a bit of trouble reaching some bits so sometimes one of us has to go in with her - not ideal now I'm 6 mths pregnant. Another couple of months and she'll be fine on her own I think though. There's usually a couple of the staff on the equipment too to give the littlest a leg up. As hulababy says the food is good too, for the kids and for you, although it's not cheap.

Cheers for directions to the pirate ship.

summermum · 06/01/2008 20:39

went to junglemania on friday,it was brill, both kids loved it, 4 yr old prefers it to pirate Ship and even 2yr old was off and on all the equipment happily. oNe thing I thought was really good was that you are encouraged to go and play with the kids.Staff v friendly food good and well priced, plenty of tables and nice and clean.Definately go again but prob more in summer as it took us 20mins to walk from tram.

hulababy, know what you mean about other kids at Pirate ship,i've had to speak to older ones before, I once had to continually ask girl to leave my DD (18months then) alone, she was lifting her upby the neck, almost strangling her and pullin her head off,in the end I had toask the mother tospeak to daughter and she seemed unimpressed,i guess you can't tell the types of kids who will be there, S8 snobbery in my case (not quite S10 lol). JUnglemania was certainly less rowdier and generally nicer, i guess being newer helps. Excellent capaccino as well and nice to see homemade cakes.

DH took ours to the new ranmoor one when i was away and a good time was had by all
